His election means for Klamath County an administration of county affairs
in which money will cease to be paid for attorneys fe.es and more money will be
available for road building; in which no money will be paid to private detec
tive agencies And more money will be spent in school development.
If you as a taxpayer and voter stand for progress, how can you do other
wise than endorse the attitude shown by this extract from Mr. Chastain's
signed and published statement:

8A.N FltANCiaCO, Oct. 13. A. J.
HcKay, a Southern Pacific lomorno-,
tlvo cnglncor. discussing motorists
who raco with bis train for a com
mon crossing, I spuixled o know
what all tho hurry Is about. Says J
McKay: ,
"If auto-drivers realised bow lit
tle time they save It they succeed
In crossing In front of an approach
ing train they might be more con
tent to wait until the train got by
and thus guarantee their own safety.
"A local passenger train, consist
ing of an engine and four or five
coaches, traveling at 45 miles an,
hour will moke 66-fcct a second and
wilt be only tiro or six seconds In
going over the crossing and a little
less than that If making the limit of
CO miles an hour. The heavier over
land train, with the cars averaging
a little longer than In local service,
will generally pass over a road cross
ing at the rate of one a second. If
the aeto-driver stops at the track
while the train In still a quarter of
a mile away, he will only have to
wait about 20-seconds for the train
to get to tho crossing and then a
few seconds moro for the train to
get by.
"Most of tho -ecldonts at highway
crossings are those In which the
auto gots mixed up with high speed
trains. Freight trains of SOcars or
less, frequently travel at tho rato of
30-mJlcs an hour and at that rata of
speed the shorter cars wUl bo going
over the crossing at tho rnto of ono
a second; longer freight trains at
slower speod will uso moro time, but
evon then the delay In Insignificant.
"Frequently engineers of trains
make reports ot "close calls." but
there does not seem to bo much re-
sutl front that courte.
"Somo drivers claim that no warn
ing was gtvon by the approaching
engine, but what can bo snld for n
man who strikes the side of a train
affer the engine and three or four
cars have gone by? Or the man who
claims he would have "made It" It
the gate-man had not dropped the
gate? He broke the gate and had
his machine wracked.
"A few seconds! Is It worth the
risk?"
