Their discovery was nra matte. In May. 1U70, Caplaln Klrby ef the schooner Hutching, out of Oloucester. Masa. was trawling for cod off the Nantucket banks. No cod was found, but a large 0th, unknown to science, ws present In great num bers. In a very short time 5,000 pounds of the new species were caught. The fish proved to be of high food value and good keeping qustlllr. There was a big popular demand for thcin, and huge quantities wero caught for three years. Then the supply failed a sud denly tt had npenred. In the spring of INK! thn tmnts failed to catch a single tllrftsh. A few day Ister Incoming boat reported having passed through mile of dead or dying tlletlsh. They covered n area of fl.000 square miles, and were estimated to number 1,000.000,000. From 182 to 1D1R no trace of tile fish was found In nny waters ot the world, adds our correspondent. Scien tific men were convinced that the flh bad been maidenly and mysteriously exterminated. Then, early InlDtB, a government boat. In almost the Identi cal sot off thn Nantucket banks as that In which tlletlsh were first taken, again caught some of the same specie. Antn there proved to lie vast num ber of hrm, and new ground were also) discovered along the New Jersey rontt. Since then tho tlleflsh has been caught without Interruption, but the riddle of Its strange dlssnjienrsnre for 133 year has not yet, been solved. sisnrnesirr uuaruianv '. r wi,,, 1,1-1 n n n 11.1 1.1 lm.
