Snakss Frlsndt of Farmer.
A correspondent who Is Interested
In snnkes as well at flowers and birds
and tho other more popular things in
nature writes tha be haa gratifying
success In locating tnakea by merely
listening for their rustling In the dry
leaves. If one's ears are specially
trained for snake noises there la no
good reason why this method should
not be really practical. Unquestionably
the majority of wood wauderers are
almost blind In this matter or snaitea.
Unleas we almost step on him we sel
dom know that he la lurking near at
hand and remaining very still la the
hope that he will not be noted. All
our tnakea are practically' defenseless.
Tbey are not only Inoffensive and tim
id creatures, bnt alto highly uaeful
friends of the farmer. Possibly the
baby snakes are In leaa danger .than
the adult. ' The little fellows are lew
conspicuous, and, at before noted, they
can hide In very small refuges.
