Kverett Malone rede up the river
Tuesday and visited IMum springs.
He reports a fine potato crop at tha
was defeated In three races by the
American sloop Vigilant, owned by a
syndicate headed by C. O. Iselln. In
1895 Punraven returned with the
culler Valkyrie III. The sloop De
fender waa built by tho Iselln syndi
cate to dofond the trophy. In the
second contest Valkyrie III was dis
qualified and windrow.
In 1899 Sir Thomas Llpton brought
over his first chnllongor, Shamrock I.
To meet her tho Isolln syndicate
built tho sloop Columbia, which won
Iho first raco of Iho series by 10 min
ute and 8 seconds. In tho noxt raco
tho Shamrock wan dlsubled and tho
defender had n sallowr. Tho third
raco was won by Columbia In 0 min
utes and 34 seconds. '
For tho noxt raco, In 1901, Sir
Thomas Llpton built tho Shamrock
II, while tho Now York Yacht club
again rolled upon the Columbia to
defend tho cup. Tho Columbia won
tho first and third of tho sorlos.
Shamrock II finished first In the
second contest, but lost the raco on
tlmo allowance.
Tho last series waa In 1903, when
Sir Thomas brought over Shamrock
III to sail against the Reliance Tha
nml were sailed In August and Re
liance capturod all three without dif
ficulty. In tho final contest the chal
lenger became lost Is a fog.
