Hawaii Claims Wettest Spot
Hawaii now claims the wettest spots
on earth. From records covering n
long period, Cherrapunjl, a vlllago at
an elevntlon of about -1,500 feet In the
Khnsl hills In India, has established
a rainfall average of -VM Inches a year,
with n maximum of 003 Inches In tbe
questionable record for 1S01. Short
period observation show that Mount
Walalcale, the central peak of tbe
Island of Kauai, with a height of 5.0S0
feet, has a yearly average of 4T0
Inches; while estlmatea for nearby lo
calities for the wet years of 1014 and
lUij, when no records were kept, make
It appear that the rainfall then murt
have exceeded 000 Inches. Other parts
of Hawaii are scarcely leu damp. Puvi
Kukul. 5.000 feet high, on the Island of
Maul, has hsd a seven-year average it
300 Inches, with maximum of 062
Inches In 1014. At least a doten other
spots, above 1,000 feet of elevation, are
reported to have exceeded 550 Inch
In each of tho years 1914 and 1918.
Queen Measure's Carnival.
All the Protestant churches acknowl
edge the continual' diminution of their
congregations and are earnestly en
deavoring to discover why the grout
majority abstain from public worship,
aays a Sydney, N. S. W., dispatch to
the London Times. Several novel
schemes have been propounded to
make services moro attractive, but the
clergy flinch from any startling Inno
vations. Recently Itev. C Black at a
meeting of the llaptlst union declared
that "Queen Pleasure holds high carni
val," nnd centinued: "The churches nro
unheeded by the mass of pleasure
trippers, who patter by with feet
tingling with the torch of the tango,
ears mingle w Ith the jingle of the Jaix,
nnd hearts aflame with riotous pas
sion." Record Energy.
Darwin ha made many records, Its
most picturesque recent exploit being
the deportation of unpopular officials
from the Northern territory, but hith
erto no one has accused the wharf
men In this tropical outpost of Aus
tralla's north of establishing working
records, Recently, however, the man-'
agement of Vestey's Meat works prom
ised the wharf laborers loading a meat
steamer payment for 17 shifts In order
to get the vessel away promptly. Ac
cording to a correspondent of one of
tho Southern newspapers, the wharf
lumpers performed the work la 10
shifts and received 101 each, New
