WAHIIINOTON, June 10. Indka lion nro that ht the Now York city ceiiNii I announced It will nhow a total population larger than tho lat available figure for London, The race for largest city In the world, however, wll be undecided until Lon don' official census of 1921 I an nounced. While no official Intimation ha been gvleu a to the growth of New Vork during tho laat 10 year. will bo shown by the enumeration made In January, estimate of the city proper place the total population at about 6,100,000 and for the metro politan district of New York, con sisting of the city propor and the territory 10 mile from It bound aries, at nbout 8,200,000, These es timate are computed on the canin bureau' method ct arithmetical pro gression shown by experience to be nearer In accuracy In the majority of case than any other formula. Sta tistic for the city proper will be the first given out; the figure for the metropolitan district will not be available until soino time later. London' population, according to the latest available statistic which are estimate for 1917, give the pop ulation for Registration London, the London for census purpose, a 4,' 026,001 nnd for Greater Iindon. comprising the City and Metropolitan police, district ami covering a radlu of 1G mile from Charing C'roi, a 6,276.763 .Mniiy factor have entered Into the grouth of both New York and Lon- liloli since their lust official count were taken. The war, officials here believe, tins had it effect on the growth of both cities. New York I believed to have suffered from tho itnppage of the stream of Immigra tion, a large portion of which in pre vious decades has settled there. Kentucky' contribution ,.v ,,.- iiri,Hh government. London' losses of her men at the front were Konslderuble and these are expected to affect her total population to some extent. New York' metropolitan district us shown by return of 22 New Jcr y cities and towns whose popula tion already have been announced, wll not show so heavy a growth a It did in tho decade ending with 1910 Theso cltle and town, Including Newark, I'atcrson and Jersey City, show an Increase only four-flttb as large a was shown 10 year ago. Fair comparison of the population of the world's two largest'1 cities is difficult, census bureau officials de clare, owing to the areas covered by the various designation. New York city proper, composed of the borough of the Ilronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens aid Richmond, covers about 287 square miles. Its population In 1910 was 4,761,883. The metropolitan district of New York, comprising territory within 10 mllos of the city boundaries Including all Incorporated places bait of whose area ties within tho Umlt or halt ot whose population reside within the limit, covers about 164 square miles. The population of this metropolitan district was 4,474,568 In 1910. The city of London within munic ipal and parliamentary limits has an area of 665 acres, a little more than a square mile, and la 1911 had a night population of 19,667 and a day, or worltlng, population ot morn than 1,000,006. The Administrative Coun ty of London, Known as Inner-Lon-dou, Is composed of the city and county of London, and Is described as tho London tor consus purposes. It has an area of about 116 square miles and had a population in 1911 ot 4,521,685. This populatlen showsd a decrease of almost halt a million pooplo In tho estimate mndo In 1917. (Iroutor London, comprising tho administration county ot London and tho outor ring area covered by tho city und metropolitan police districts, oxtonds to a radius of 15 miles from Charing Cross, It has an area of about 693 sqaaro miles and its popu lation In tho official census ot 1911 was 7,251,358, lis eoUmated popula tion In 1917 was 6,726,763.
