Unlike somo of tho coast cities
which obtained much of their activ
ity during tho war. through a boom
brought by military necessity and
then discovered a cessation nf work
upon the signing of the armistice,
this condition did not affect Tacoma.
Tacoma had four largo wooden ship
yards In operation during the war.
These are now closed, but tho one
big steel yard which commenced op
erations at that time still has gov
ernment contracts on hand and com
bined with naval construction will
bo In certain operation for at least

Tho Blue Funnel line and the Har

service, formerly one of the features
from Tacoma, was discontinued as
the result of tho war.
The serrlce now from Tacomt by
American vessels Is about th- onmo
as that of Japanese lines whir-) bo
fore the war tho trade was h'indlcJ
entirely by Japanese or Ilritlsh bot
toms. During the month of April
this year four Japanese vessels took
cargoes from Tacoma to the Orient
and tho same number of American
ships sailed.
In connection with the foreign
trade from Tacoma, conditions for
new business is most optimistic. It Is
said. New port development here
will glvo better cargo handling facil
ities. This Is attracting old lines as
well as new where tho operators do
sire expeditious handling of enrgo.

Don't Be Content With
"Hobson's Choice!"
More than a hundred years ago, Toby Hobson of
Cambridge kept the only horses for hire in town. But
his customers had no choice save to take the horse
nearest the door, whether little or much to their" liking.
So "Hobson's Choice" has come to mean: "Take
this or none."
Today, through the advertisements in this and other
papers, you have all the world to choose from. Yes,
through Advertisements, the world comes to your door
with its wares. Advertisements give you the oppor
tunity for comparison and selection of almost anything
you want or need.
Advertisements are an accurate index of what other
people are buying, selling, wearing, eating, doing,
learning; of what the world is accomplishing and how
where, and by whom it is being accomplished.
Form the habit of reading advertisements just as
regularly as you read the front page. You will find it
profitable and mightily, interesting as well.
