CHURCHES PLAN TO .
AID RURAL LIFE
Interchurch World Movement
Surveyors Find Lethargy
In Oregon.
Tho church lined to have to compete
with tho nnloon'fiii tho center of recrea
tion, Now It linn to compute with the
tnovle, tho dance-hall anil the motor
car.
Thin In tho view of tho problem fac
ing rural churches Oregon, of sur
oyors for tho Interchurch World
Movement who havu spent monthi
making Itivcstlatlonn of condition! In
llio Rtute.
"Wo cannot complain becauso these
other attraction aro drawing tho peo
1lo away from the church," said ono,
"bo long as we do not provide any
nltornntlvo nodal attractions. The
church linn to meet the demand of the
community In which It exists, physical
nnd recreational nit well ait iplrltual,
ami mi long ai It does not meet them
It cannot proteiit nttulnst tho fact that
tho il ii rice hill nnd movies occupy the
it'lHiiro time of the younger pooplc,
while l ho whole family Ii lured by the
prospect of a motor trip rather than
l what the church at present has to
offer.
"The church has to offer something
better. It will not accomplish much
by denouncing tho dance-hall and other
amusements of which It disapproves
so long as Its criticism Is merely nega
tive. It has to tako a posltlto course
and provide entertainment nnd rccrca-
Hon of genuine attraction and so oust
tho bad with tho good. I know of
one Sunday school that facod this prob
lem In a vigorous way. It found that
the local pool hall was attracting large
numbers cf young men, so It Bought
the pool tables, thus closing tho pool
hall. Hut It did not stop there. It
offered entertainment which offectl'e
ly reached these young men who bad
protlously spent their tlmo at tho poo
lull. We can have movies Jn th
church too, especially thoso education
al films which can easily bo got from
the G;ernmcnt departments."
Bo-ne auricyors found that thero wai
a general lack of Interest In tha church
nnd rcllg'ous things In the rural dis
tricts which they visited. "Pastors are
becoming discouraged," one t aid. "and
spend tart of their time working on
fa-ma Inrtcad of putting all their ef
fort Into church work."
Iho results of thoae surreys will
form an Important part of the program
at the conference (o bo held in this
county early In April.
