REDUCE FIT
CHICAGO, May 10, Fnt persons
nil over the United Stales are watch
ing with grunt Interest the CO-day
experiment of I)r, John Dill Robert-
i son, city health commissioner. In
ulrlcs nljtwly received hero suggest
. tl.o probability that If the Chicago
j experiment Is successful It may bo
tried In other communities.
J Success reported In tho first week

tbo organlrntlqn of other classes In
I this city and altogether mere than
j.200 persons horn aro trying to see
I how rapidly they can regain their
youthful figures.
Tho leaders of the fat elimination
contest here avor that the experi
ment can be tried by anyone suffer
ing from a surplus of adverdupols.
Ilcusenable exercise and a strictly
controlled diet constitute two ot the
chief features of the Chicago exper
iment. The dally menus of tho reducing
class ure prepared by Miss Iluth Wil
bur, cf the health commlsslou's'traln

this supervision of diet to be esstn

, between meals Miss Wilbar suggests
that a glass of water will satisfy that
"empty feeling."
Here Is a .typical menu prepared
!by Miss Wilbar for one day:
Ureakfast Ono medium apple, one
egg, one slice of toast, one cup of
coffee with one and a naif table
spoons of skimmed milk Instead of
i cream.
I 10:20 a. m. One-half cup of
bouillon with one cracker.
Luncheon Medium serving of
lean cold roast beef; two thin slices
lot rye bread; lettuce and cottage
'cheese salad; two and one-bait table-
'spoonsful of French dressing; tea
,lth lemon; one cracker.
j Dinner Large serving of boiled
cod, with lemon; largo serving of
'plain cauliflower; one scant teaspoon
of butter: lettuce salad or celery;
one-half an orange; black csffet.
10:30 p. m. One-bait cup hot
skim milk.
1 Each of the women Is expected to
work an hour a day In bcr garden It
she has a garden otherwise to take
long walks and setting up exercises.
Dally the women report by tele
phone and receive Instructions, In
cluding a diet for the following day.
On Thursduy of each week they re
port at the city hall and are weighed,
and the week's loss-
r gain rec-
.orded on their cbarta.
The 24 women In the first class
i averaged In weight at the start of
the experiment, 201.6 pounds, 4B.IJ
pounds more than their average nor
mal weight, and Dr. Robertson says
he expects to take approximately 40
of those pounds from each woman.
The leader ot the claaa Is lira.
Nellie Leonard, age 32, a typist, who
tipped the scales at 323 pounds but
lost eight pounds In the first seven
da'ys. Dr. Robertson figured hor
normal weight at 141 pounds.
Miss Catherine Scott, age 28, also
a typist, is the "baby of the class,"
she 'weighed in at 166 H and her
normal weight was calculated at 121.
Miss Scott stands just a half-Inch
above five feet. '
The anti-fat crusade Is a serious
venture, Dr. Robertson says, aimed to
point the dangers and discomforts ot
excess weight and show the easo
with which it can be eliminated.
Japan is one of tho principal con
sumers ot Chilian nitrates, and Im
ports a groat deal of copper and Iron
ores und other raw materials abund
ant In Chile. On tho other hand,
there Is understood to be a great
demand in Chile for Jupanese cotton
gcods, 'glass wares, porcelains and
other products; but tbolr exportation
-to Chile is hampered by high freight
ratoa.
Japan is now assiduously engaged
In oxtondlng her trade to tho South
Pacific Islands, tho straits settle
ments und other places nnd it bus
been suggested that" tho proposed
lines of sailing vessels could bo' out
lined for this purpose.
