II08TON, Jan, 2 1.- Boston Is jirc

demands of modern conditions. Small
strips are to bo sliced from llo.iton
Common, training ground for troops
In Revolutionary days, and urcuiUng
of tho tower of tin O ri South .Moet

parly" was hatched, Is contemplated.
Traffic problems, acute In this city
of narrow '"cow-lane" streets, In each
case are responsible.
The paring of tho Common on two
sides of Its 4 3-acre area ha been
sanctioned only after tho overcoming
of long-standing opposition by tiiow
who held that no considerations of
modern lovelopment should disturb
this revolutionary landmark and pro-
sent day bieathlng space In tho city's
centor. Several years ugo the voters
turned down a proposal to shrink
tho common In order to swell the
streets. But In tho recent city elec
tlon tho voters In nil but two wards
ilnclnrnil In favor of widening tho
streets from Common lands. The two
wards which opposed the plan are lri
Charlestown, csat of another historic
shrlno, Bunker Hill Monument.
Under tho plan, which is a com
promise arranged between the street
vcorrfmlssloncrs and the Boston Com-
mon' Society, Trcmont and, Boylson
streets, which bound the Common on
(wtT'df Its sides, will be widened to
n'rh'axlmnm of 43 feet Instead of 50
U".'60 feet as first proposed. This will
be accomplished without sacrifice of
greensward or trees, as the cut will
be made from the broad malls, or,t,he
C''mmon. The. compromise plan car
rie'd with It an. agreement that po
further Invasion .pt the Common
would b made.
Boston Cbmmbn was bought Jn
1634 by Governor Winthrop end 'Oth

and planting grounds. Today it is the
sole remainder of 'these ancient com
