"Uncle Joe" Cannon's Withering Re

to Make "Bluff" Good,
Joseph Guernsey Cannon, more af
fectionately known throughout the
length and breadth of the land as
"Uncle Joe," Is Hearing his elghty
fourth birthday. He loves his f el low
man and Is ooe of the most affable
members of congress toward stran
gers, nut Uncle Joe hates "boun
ders" and lobbyists and is stin young
and vigorous enough to resent thplr
attempts at familiarity, says the Wash
ington Star'.
For the benefit of a couple of men
with legislative axes to grind whom
he wa endeavoriag to Impress 'with
his own Importance around the capitpi,
one of( ,the well-known Jpbbylsts held
up ''Uncle Joe" near thfc cigar coun
ter In the f bouse restaurant "Hello,
Uncle Joe!" he exclrilraed. "Haven't
seen you for tome days. Yon sure are
looking fine. Won't, yon, have a cigar
wlthms -oneof,yoor old favorites?" ,
Then the cpld, steady, steely look in ,
untie joes eyes gave mm a warning,
lie tried to bluff.lt off.
"vhy, Uncle Joe, you don't seem to
remerpher me."
But he reckoned without his host
you Just can't bluff Uncle Joe. He has
pinyed the great American Indoor
game too long for thatj With shoul
ders thrown back, arms stiffened at
his side, eyes piercing the presuming
acquaintance, he raised himself on his
toes, leaning cloer and daringly to
ward the face of Ihe other, and said:
"No, I don't remember you. Why, If
when you get to the pearly gates you
don't look more familiar to St. Peter !
than you do now to me. he'll say to
you. 'Get to out of here; I don't

Pursuit Long a Favorite Amusement
of the Admirers of Writer of
Immortal. Fiction.
One of the most Interesting of seml
lltcrary hobbles is the search after
the origin of "Dickens names." It Is
specially Interesting, no doubt, because
nobody can prove to demonstration
that his particular "solution" Is the
correct one, and. as a consequence,
the long list of potential discoveries
Is seldom reduced, much less exhaust
ed. One of the lntest "strikes" Is a
possible origin for the old favorite,
"I'hndhand." A recent writer tells how.
a few ,i'rs ago. In one of the small
ho inlet, between Sutton and Epsom,
there stood a small tailor's s!.op bear
Intr In large letters the name of "Chad
luiml" And lie goes on to wonder
whether Dickens, "going down by road
Dorking, noticed the name, and kept
It for future use." for on that route
lie would have passed the ery door
, of the shop. The writer seems to think
It highly likely; while. In proor tnat
Plrkens actually made the Journey,
was It not In the town of Dorking
that there stood the Marquis of Gran
by? And was It not the hostess of
the Marquis of Granby who ultimate
ly became Mrs. 'eller? Christian

WHAT IS IT?
It is the best paying class of advertising in the world if you
have something to sell that belongs among little ads that you find
in The Herald.
JUST TRY IT ONCE
, If you have something in your attic, your basement, your
spare room, your barn, around you anywhere that you want to
sell, try The Herald classified ads and you will find' a buyer.
IF YOU WANT SOMETHING
Advertise for it, trying The Herald's classified ads. Some
one has something for sale that you want. Let The Herald find
it for you. It costs you but a few cents a day;
Classified ads cost you 5 cents a line a day five words to the
i
line. They must be paid for in advance and cannot be received
over the telephone that is why they are so cheap.
Beauty In Seaweed.
Contemplating seaweed, the curator
of this department In the New York
botanical gardens has made a sug
gestion, timely with regard to the
present exhibition of specimens In the
Metropolitan Museum of Art, that here
may be found many a charming sug-,
gestion, hitherto unnoticed by. artists,
'or the creation of decorative designs.
One Is reminded of the passage "In
which Ruskln tells how the Greek
architect found a beautiful design In
the movement of ocean waves; and
wonders that Ruskin himself, with his
keen appreciation of art suggestions
In nature, did not deal with the varied
beauty of design discoverable In the
different senweeds. Perhaps he 'did.
and one has forgotten It; at any rate
seaweed has not, It seems, yet "sup
plied suggestion for the design of lace,
tapestries, prints, and architectural
ornament, and the Idea adds material
for the work of designers.

Mortgage on a Cat.
There was filed In the office of the
recorder of deeds in Stockton, Mo the
most unusual chattel mortgage ever
presented at the office. The articles
mentioned to secure a debt of $40
were as follews: One shotgun, one
Winchester rifle, two violins, one black
tomcat with white feet, named Tom.
It was not specified that the guns had
hummers nor the fiddle with bow, but
the Identification of the tomcat was
considered by the mortgagee the most
valuable part of the security. St.
