blocks of hard shale were first blasted
loose, than carefully split with chisel
nnd hammer to expose Tiny fossjl re
trains between the laminae. The shale
has preserved for some twenty million
yeurs animals that were as soft and
nonreslstant as Jellyfish, worms, crabs,
etc., notwithstanding nil the vicissi
tudes these rocks have since under
gone from the time they were simply
hardened mud. They have been sub
jected to much pressure nnd profound
chemical change, but the fossils re
main nerfect.
