MONDAY, MARCH 10, 101D DOXT ROCK THE BOAT The following- from the "Boot and Shoe Recorder" Is so timely that we print it in full. Read it. It, is not only for the merchant, but It Is ap plicable to every man and woman in this city. After you have read it. Just let Its application to you soak In. Don't apply It to the other fellow Just be honest with yourself and your family. Just once, and then resolve, come what may, that you will, from this day forward, meet all things in a spirit of co-operation, and not be the fool that rocks the boatl If there ever was a time in the his tory ot tho -world when It was dan gerous to "rock the boat," it Is today. There are many ways of "rockine the boat.'' One Is Just as dangerous as the other. Politicians can do it LABor can and is doing it In some quarters. Capital can and Is doing it (la. some ways In many quarters as represented by the merchants ot the country. Kacb Individual can do it, aad la doing It la many ways. We have lust passed through the meat terrible war ever known to his tory It disrupted Industries and the regular mode ot living In ever' re spect, we. in America, have been P It Mr, and Mrs.C. cent arrivals from H. Peters and A. M. Dennlson were Incoming passengers on the rive serious thought to the matter and decide whether or not we really want a drop lu prices. Pretty nearly nil shoe men bave been doing a better mid bigger business in the last car or two thnu thev hae ever done De fore. Thl has been due to the pros- ferity of the country and the tact that the people, or, a great number of them, were making more money th.-i.i thev had eer made before. This was diie to the high salaries paid, which lu turn caused the so-called high cost of living. We cnnuot have a low cost of IMtiK with high wnges To labor, which plays too great a pirt In the cost of ptoductton ot eveiy kind Labor has stated time and time again that It will not accept n reduc tion In wages and In some sections today It Ls even striking for higher wages. The wise business men of tho country do not want to see a reduc tion of wages. One moment many of these men talk against reduction In wages and then the very next mom ent say they have not placed thelr usual orders because they are look ing for a drop of prices. The two cannot go hand In hand. High wages mean general presperity: mean that people will spend money freely and that all of us will make money Prices on manufactured goods cannot be cut down ni long as the cost of raw materials remain htgli and labor Is paid high salaries. Out. side of these facts there Is only one way that pi Ices can be forced down find this way means disaster. Yet it is .surprising how many merchants, and many of them big merchants yho we considered wise business men, are doing their part right now to brlns this about. The way they are "rocking the boat" very severely is by not plao" ing their usual orders for goods Itlght Now. If they continue In their policy of waiting for a drop In prices they will have them, but how? It will be brought about by a general re fusal on the part of merchants to! place orders, with the result that the factories will have a vast over supply; some ot them will have toj sell at cost or possibly below cost, to turn their goods into cash; they) will Immediately cut down produc-j 'Ion by laying off help, meaning gen- cral unemployment, witn one great' big result an Industrial depression l that will take years for us to recover iruui.
