For ten years or more the people have been given a service by the Southern Pacific com pany that has been a disgrace to the state. No matter how vigorous the protest, it has been met with Indiffer ence and Insolence, and followed with worse servlce'than before, until It has reached the point where the people ride into the city on a train with a schedule little faster than freights and with coaches -poorly lighted. poorly ventilated and poorly heated. Occasionally there Is a rift In the cloud of service, when these condi tions do not prevail, but it seems that these are vouchsafed only to em phasize the deplorable quality of the other. Strangers coming to Klamath Falls are disgusted when they reach here, and instead of entering the city with a feeling of hopefulness and enthusiasm, they ere filled with dis gust and criticism, which has sent hundreds of desirable settlers away from here. Starting at Weed with the robbery of a cent a mile, this Is continued by poor service. Then if travellers ship In anything by freight, the thieving tactics are capped by charges 'that amount to practical "confiscation. This policy has been practiced now for ten years, and the people have been growing more and more rebellious until they have reached tbe uprising point, and the Southern Pacific w new find that instead of having the HO-I.J will and friendship of the shin pinr and travelling public. It, has- the auprcme hatred of nearly every resid ent of the county. And it deserves it. Klamath Falls is going after the Southern Pacific with hammer and tongs.- It is going to force it to let loose its destroying grip of high freights, high passenger fares and poor service and it is going to force It to reduce the former on a level with other cities and Improve the Jatter to a degree commensurate with the business it is receiving. j though most of them were below nor ; mat production and some were not In production at all. " The notification of the Klamath Irrigation District that the govern ment has signed a release of the liens upon the lands of the Klamath Proj ect embraced within the boundaries of the Irrigation District, will be good news to the stockholders for two reasons, It removes the only excuse Mr. Offiold and Mr. Marshall had to offer for refusing to sanction tlio Joining of the District In the suit to test the legality of the Power com pany's contract with the government, whereby It was pormltted to con struct a dam across Link River, It also removes' the last obstacle In the way of the farmers taking advantage of tho .Farm Loan undor government regulations. When the question of releasing the liens was before the board of directors at Its last meeting, Mr. Offleld stated that if the district would Join with the water users in the lawsuit, It would prevent tho consummation of the contract be tween' 'the District and the govern meBt but If tbe directors were let lost It would be possibly to secure thl release wfthfn three months.
