SACRAMENTO, Oct. 31. The wa
ter contents of a number of anow
flalda In 'the Sierra Nevada moun
tain' will be measured this winter
under the aupervlalon of the Califor
nia State Engineering department.
To do this the state has obtained vir
tually all of the scientific apparatus
available In the United Statea for
auch observations. It Is the first
time auch work haa been attempted
In the public Interest anywhere In
the world, except aa a scientific ex
periment .according to Major P. M.
Norboe, aaalatant atate engineer.
Some of the Information gained, it
la expected, will be of value to the
federal government when It prepares
to lay out a transcontinental aerial
route. '
The object of the work is two-fold;
the Information will be used to warn
people In the valleys of California
and Nevada of the possibilities of
flooda In the aprlng, when the anow
beglaa to melt. ' And to determine
whether there la danger of a drought
In the auromer aeaaon, and that Irri
gators) may be warned of the need
for conserving waer.
