ULLETIN ON FOOD SITUATION
Altho tlio real privations of the war
ho Bcurccly been noted in this din
trlct, and altho the sscrlflces entailed
by thuMo nearer the front have not
been realized, the local residents, who
are patriotic, and they all are, with
very few exceptions, are about to get
their first real food pinch since the
outbreak of the war.
The food shortage which dally grows
more alarming, calls for the most
strliiRcnt measures, If the country Is
going to fulfill Its duty of supplying
food to tho soldiers In the trenches.
Meatless Homes Until Harvest

Flour for the Alllea and Our Own Men
In France. Double or Trcblo tbe Use

tho slogans, from tbo food sdralnUtrs

Bulletins from the food administra
tor advlae that:
"The next two months will be the
moat critical In tte feed WsUry of the
world. The alllea muat have 75,000,000
bushels of wheat before harvest time
or quit fighting. Unless we send it,
they must take tho ships thst are so
precious and go far to tbe Argentine
for It. Kvery ship Is needed to get our
men, guns and munitions across, we
do not dare spare even tbe space to
ship enough beef. It Is tbe season
when corn would germinate In pass
age. We must send that whest!
"How nre wo to do It? A careful
check made in March showed thst if
we send the allien that 75,000,000 bush
pIh i would hsve only 100,000.000
bushels tn last us until hsrvest, where
wo usually ent 200,000,000. This means

usual. i i
"No patriotic family will eat more
than ltt pounds of wheat flour per
week per person as a maximum, In
cluding bread, cake, crackers, tfaca
ronl, breakfast foods, and all use In
cooking. The family that eats more la
shirking Its share. One and three
fourth pounds of Victory bread Is
equal to one pound of flour, permitting
four thin one-ounce slices per day per
person.
"Every family that can possibly do
so will abolish wheat from the table
altogether, or come Just as near that

total abstainers' clubs, pledged to do
without wheat. Remember poor peo
ple In big cltlea and those who have
no home-baking facilities, must buy
bakers' bread, and cannot do their
sharo without great suffering. To
maintain this average, most of us must
do more than our share. Oregon shoula
be nearly It not entirely wheatleu.
Idaho has promised ft wheatlens state

do less?
'Arkppras patriots turned back it.

patriotic which bad on hand more thxn

because of the larger .w.k'i or nour
used, that would bo poslbly severe.
But unless In very remote sections or
under extremely unusual conditions,
no loyal family should have oa hand,
at the outside, more than on sack of
wheat flour. Turn back every pound
over that; and. many families can turn
back practically every pound they
bava still in unbroked sacks. Dealers
are requested to pay the market price
fur this for the government, and to re-
nort every purchase at once to the
United Statea grain corporation, Board
of Trade building, Portland.
