California Roads Will
Open Isolated Districts
SAN FRANCISCO. Nov. 21. The
opening up of Eureka and other coast
points to important inland points in
Northern and Central California and
Oregon thru roads and trails in the iso
lated Trinity and Klamath National
forests is now being effected by the
National Forestry service. In cu-oper.i

sion. The Salmon River road, which
will take ten ears to complete, will
be the principal artery between these

points. The government Is contribut
ing $75,000 and Siskiyou County $10.
000 a car for this project. This road
will open up a badly isolated region.
A twenty-six mile road Is also being
constructed down the south fork of
the Trinity River In the Trinity Na
tional forest, which will also open up
an isolated region to settlement. This
road will eventually become a lateral
of the main trunk highway between
Red Uluff and Eureka.

SUATTI.E. Nov. 21. Residents of
Nome, Alaska, are planning to ship
reindeer meat to the "outside" in larse
quantities ne.t ear as food, according
to S. J. Bakke, former mayor of Nome.
who arrived here recently. It is said
there are over 12,000 head of reindeer
herded by Eskimos, In the vicinity of
Nome.
One Nome company shipped a car
and a half of reindeer meat to Seattle
this month. One car will be sent east
and the rest will be sold in Seattle.

Laugh, proprietor of the hotel at Tiller,
was "arrested at Riddle by Deputy
Sheriff Hopkins, charged with driving
his automobile white intoxicated.
Laugh was fined $50 by the justice
of the peace who found him guilty as
charged, and the offender was obliged
to hire a man tp drive his car home to
Tiller, about thirty mlleV.
MEDFORD, Nov. 21. It was learned
at the last session of the county court
that the services of R. C. Porter of
Ashland, who had been employed for
several months in breaking up boot
legging between California towns
across the state line and towns in this
county, have been dispensed with. The
situation is to be handled b,y the sher
iff office instead, it was a'nnounced.

SAN FRANCISCO, Nov. 21. All
fears of a coal famine in California
have been set at rest by an announce
ment of the war service board that
1,700 carloads are to be broughtto
this city from the Utah and Wyoming
fields, together with big shipments
from Seattle and British Columbia.
The war service board figures that
there is enough coal in sight to last
the state-more than 100 days.

Eskimos in far northern remote Alas
kan villages, almost completely cut off
from the outside world, will soon hear
the call of the Red Cross according
to reports reaching here. Miss Mary
Westdahl, a native school teacher of
Bllm. a village between Nome and St.
Michael, has taken up the task of lead
ing the Red Cross drive among the na
tives In her" district, and hopes to add
hundreds of Eskimo children and their
parents to the list of contribute to
the relief organization.
ASTORIA. Nov. 21. One of the first
cases on the docket of the Circuit
Court, which will convene again No
vember 26th, will be that or the State
of Oregon against Captain Carver,
master of the steamer Kllburn, on ap
peal from the, Justice court, whero the
skipper was found utility and fined for
iilegnl possession of intoxicating
liquor. The steamer was raided by the
sheriff and n large amount of liquor
secured. Seven members of the, steam
er's crew also were fined and took appeals.
