Director Barrett, who based -his conclusions upon the careful study of actual conditions which he made at the front when tn Franca last autumn, said: "So, much is written and said about the terrible phaaea of war and the battle front, which frighten parents, discourage enlisting, and Inspire ef forts at exemption, that something should be said without exaggeration about the brighter conditions upon and behind the firing line: Altho ev. ery man who. fights or visits the front agrees that the scenes and happenings In 'no man'a land' 'and the advance trenches during actual battle are wagon; suitable for working team or driving. "Only a very small percentage ot the men at the so-called front are at one and the same time in the advance trenches or engaged In battle, ,and those stationed at the very front are relieved every few days. .At regular and frequent Intervals the men in the advance lines are brought back be yond the reach of fire for Test and change, and a certain percentage of them are fnrloughed occasionally to visit London and Paris. "In the, rest camp just behind the firing line there are always organised arrangements for sports, games, ama teur theatricals and other amuse ments to give diversion to the men. There is also, and always, special .at tention given to the religious needs of the soldiers, not offensive hut sym pathetic, under carefully chosen chap lains of the representative faiths. "Those actually killed do not aver age above one in ten, and not more than three in ten are severely wound- ed, while a surprisingly large percent- age of those Injured in battle recover and return to their regiments. The system of caring for the wounded and sick,, from carrying men off the.battle field until they are Anally turned out of the hospitals far away from the din of the struggle, is now developed to a scientific perfection that can only be appreciated by those who see It work ing out. "Cases of real cowardice and deser tion are so rare as to be hardly the subject of comment or discussion. "The facilities for feeding the sol diers, both at the front and In the rear. Including the most ndvauced trenches, are astonishingly perfected, and very seldom Is thero any com plaint as to the quantity or quality of the food. The arrangements for the receiving 'and the sending of mall, even for the men under fire, are al most as efficient as those In cities during peace time, and an unremit ting effort Is made to supply the dug outs, as well as headquarters, with papers, magaxtnes and books. 'There Is no question that the ex perience at the front, no matter how terrible, Instead of making brutes of the men and debasing them, makes them more human, more sympathetic, more unselfish, and better men gen erally tban they were before. Altho the fearful strain of the battle front affects harmfully the nerves and the strength of many men, the great ma jority who are unwounded are in splendid physical condition, and will not come out of the war as mental and bodily wrecks, as often predicted." JACKSON BEET CROP PROMISING A. L. MARSHALL SAYS ROGUK RIVER FARMERS WILL NET BIG PROFITS THIS YEAR HK HOPES TO SEE FACTORY HERE A. L. Marshall, a prominent ranch er of the Olene section, has just re turned with his family from a week's vacation trip to Medford and Rogue River Valley points. Mr. Marshall reports that the ranchers In that vicinity who have water for their land are looking for ward to a bumper crop of sugar beets, having made arrangements to ship the crop to the Grants Pass factory. If the acreage yields as now esti mated, many of the farmers will net $100 per acre from their land, prov ing this crop one of the most profit able that can be produced. Marshall Is anxious to see the beet culture adopted here more extensive. ly, and believes that the Installation of a beet factory here, which Is now expected this coming year, will be the best thing that could happen to the county.
