Cor- vallU, June If. Cockle seed U pot. onous to ponltry, and If eaten In aay quantity wilt cause extreme sickness j and death. This fact was ascertained In an Investigation of the deatk at a number of small calcksaa' whose In- tottinee showed symptoms or poison ing. Some of the dead birds were seat to the poultry department along with samples of a commercial poultry feed thst had been fed to the flock but for a short time. The investigation showed that the Intestinal tracts were severely Inflamed and tke linings un dergoing fermentation and swelling. A report made by tke seed testing laboratory showed a great variety of weed seeds, among tkeai many needs of cow cockle, tke scientific name of which Is vaccarla vaccaria. The pois onous nature of this weed seed was cenflrmed by reference to the botany department, socket there la convinc ing evidence that eaekle caused tke death of the chickens. The seed Is much smaller than wheat graalas and should be screened out In threshing. Presence of cockle In poultry feed can be detected by examination en- less the seed has been crushed. The cockle seed Is n round, hard and black or dark colored seed, and about the slxe of n rather large plnhead. It la covered with a thin, hard shell.
