'in common with the people of Ore
gon, I sincerely regret the occurrence
that made necessary the appointment
of a United States Senator. The death
of Senator Harry Lane removes from
public lite a lovable and ajtRressWe
character whose ways were frank and
opea aad who, under all circumstances
performed his duty as he saw it.
I am deeply appreciative of my de
tection aa United States Senator by
Governor Jamee Wtthysomb and am
aot unmindful of the large responsibil
ity the oBtee enjoins. Aad while It
Is my belief thai the public welfare
would be promoted by a return to
Republican principles. 1 shall go to
Washington, aot as a narrow partisan
