(By Mall.)- William Richard Campbell, a driver in the Australian army, suffered the deep humiliation of trial by court martial as a fake hero, because of a forged letter from the decorations department naming him for the cov eted Victoria Cross for bravery. Sergeant Leake, a real Victoria Cross hero, helped in obtaining Campbell's acquittal with an impas sioned plea based on Campbell's mod esty while he believed himself to be the legitimate recipient of the honor. Campbell was feted by the town of Warebam and presented with an ad dress by the mayor before rumors circulated casting doubt on his right to the honor.
