SALEM. Jan. 27. With many of
the "teeth" extracted. Senator Olson's
senate bill 16, requiring tbe father of
an Illegitimate child to support and
maintain his offspring, was passed
with all supporting it except Senator
Barrett. When the bill came up tor
the first reading several of the mem
bers objected that if was "all teeth."
An amendment was proposed by
Senator Garland, making It impossi
ble for a woman to cause tbe arrest of
a man unless she bad corroborating
evidence. The bill provides for the
examination of the father before a
Justice of the peace. If he Is found
guilty he can settle with the mother
of tbe child if she is willing, and If
be fights the case the court can force
him to pay annually for tbe support
of the child in figures specified in the
bill.
John Russell Christeuson was tbe
man froien to death In a snowstorm
near Crescent a few weeks ago, ac
cording to a report by F. M. Cleaves,
who acted as coroner at tbe Inquest
In Crescent, in place of Dr. A. A.
Soule, who could not reach Crescent.
