Scarlet fever la an acute Infectious
disease of childhood, deriving Its name
from the scarlet raah which appears
about the second or fourth day of the
fever. Adulta may acquire the disease,
but not often. Hcarletlna is a synony
mous word, and doea not rob the mal
ady of any of Its symptoms or horrors.
II Is claimed that the pestilence of
Thebes In GOO 11. C. and the plague or
Allien in 430 B. C. were epidemics of
scarlet fever. It pervadea tbe old
world everywhere, and waa introduced
Into this country by shipping in the
year 1735. It now occurs In all parts
of the globe, and attacks all races of
people, although It la claimed that the
nathes of Ildla enjoy the greatest free
dom from thla fever.
It la not accurately known just what
specific organism, germ or virus pro
ducca the disease, but associated with

and staphylococci. It la not known

Just what form it Is taken by an
other, except that it la carried in the
secretions of the noae and throat and
scales of the skin.
More cases occur during October,
November and December than other
months ot tbo year. The death rate is
not so high as formerly, being about
3 or I per cent, and 90 per cent of
these canes are under 10 years of age.
Some years the epidemic appears very
mild, while other years It ia fearfully
malignant. The chief danger ia the
throat complications and tbe relapses
that occur about the second or third
week, which Inflame the heart or kid'
ney a or cause middle ear trouble.
The disease begina about two to four
daya exposure to the germ and two to
four daya later a raah usually appears.
The tenth day the fever la down and
the patient begina to scale off. It la
alx weeks before tbe patient ia safe to
himself or others.
Scarlet fever Is a very sneaking,
treacherous malady, the outcome of
which cannot be foretold. One case
may be mild and tbe next severe, ma
lignant and hemorrhagic.
If your child has a sore throat cleanse
It with sprays and gargles. Keep him
quiet above everything else, and if
scarletina develops, follow absolutely
the advice and treatment of your phy
sician and of tbe health officer.
