stock raisins homestead bill, finally
disposed of by congress Just before re
cessing for the holidays has been sent
!to the president for signature, when It

ous details will be administered.
The measure Is likely to place great
areas of public land in private owner
ship, as it raises the homestead unit
from 160 to 640 acres for lands suita
ble for grazing and stock raising pur
poses. The salient features of the
measure are as follews:
Land enterable must first be desig
nated by the secretary of Interior as
chiefly valuable for grazing and rais
ing forage creps: must not contain
merchantable Umber, and be suscepti
ble of Irrigatien: of such character
that 640 acres are reasonably required
for support of a family.
On application being filed the land!
applied for shall not be disposed of.
No right is acquired to occupy land by
reason of an application until designa
tion. A former entry of same character is

The standard Oil compayn of New
Jersey, the parent company of most of
the companies in the trust, has just
chosen Alfred C, Bedford to be presi
dent in place of the late John D. Arch
bold. He is 52 years of age. It took
him thirty-four years to work up from
the lowest position in a subsidiary of
the oil trust to Its highest place. He
began work In the Bergen Point Chem
ical company when he was 18 years
old, and he has been rising ever since.
