NATIONAL LEAGUE SHOWS WEAKNESS PRESIDENT TE.VER ADMITS THE BASEDALIi PLAYED IX HIS CI It CUIT IS XOT SO SNAPPY AS THAT OF AMERICAX LEAGUE. ki By HAMILTON' (United Press Staff Correspondent) ' NEW YOHK. Nor. 7. The weak- aess of the National League brand of "baseball, as compared with the snappy brand dished out by the American "League, pointed out by the United Press in the last world series, was ad mitted today by Governor John K. Tener, president of the National Lea gue. It Isn't Wllbert Robinson who is so much to blame for the loss of the world series, according to Governor Tener, but Is due to the fact that the players who made up the National League club were wholly unable to do the things which might have won ball games. It would have been use less, Tener contends, for Robinson to follow tactics other than the ones be did follow. The fielding, Governor Tener 'agrees, was something awful, and the Brooklyn club never has a chance against such a grand organization as the Red Soz. Tener, hpwever, Is extremely opti mistic and he believes that before the time comes for another world series his league will be strengthened tn such an extent that it will give Its Tival opposition of the sternest sort. "Work is now being done, he declares, which will give the National League undoubted strength. The National League prexy agreed that there were several clubs in the National League at the close of the last playing season which would have given the world scries fans a better run for their money than did the odgers. He diiln'tname these clubs, but it was evident ho does not be lieve the best club In the National Leaguo won the pennant. SHIPPIN'GTON SIDELIGHTS . France, Oct. 19. (By Mail) Eight hundred odd Americans enlisted In the famous French Foreign Legion la the early part of the war. The Legion, which is one of the finest fighting regiments in France, has participated in nearly all of the big offensives to date, and m3ny of the American volunteers were killed or permanently wounded In these actions. The American contingent suffered especially heavy during the big French offensive in Champagne last September, where, tho regiment, as usual, covered Itself with glory. Since then, fully :0 of the Ameri can legionaries have been transferred at their own request into the Franco American Flying Corps; others have secured their discharge, while quite recently the remaining ones have manifested an ardent desire to get into the French regiments which tho French government has finally per mitted them to do. The legion at tho present moment is defending one of the more quiet sections of the French front, whero tho first lino trenches run just in front of one of the most beautiful rnd most idstifric ohateaiis of Franco. Tho chateau ltelf has boon com pletely destroyed by tho Germans, but thq grounds, In which the legion Is encamped, remain almost as beau tiful as ever. The transfer of tho legion into this Idral spot for a fow weeks of quint trench fighting is in recompense for the brilliant part played by it In tho early part of the Sommo offensive, where It suffered heavy losses. Almost tho first man whom I met In tho legion, after the .officers, was a 19-year-old boy 'of St.' Louis, Mis souri. Although a member of the legion for only the past nine months he is proudly wearing the much cov Special Triumph of a New Art I KV AND (.'KANT T APPO.MATTO 1 "TIM; IIIK (!!,ts, and so wore tho facbliutlioi of tit-i'iirtant events. Tlio realism Is al r:nst uncanny. Often tho old war shouts nro hcurd in tlio audience from drama. "The Dlrth of a Nation" points a still more wonderful devol- opment, the old dramatic form hav- Ing beep thrown away and tho epic or historical form substituted. Tho old reproach ngalnst the "ten-tent movie" U forever removed. Of the original 100 American volunteers,- who sailed from New Yoi k on the Rocbambeau August 4, 1911, Immediately following the declara tion of war, only four remain. These aie a lieutenant of Seattle, who Is undergoing special treatment at I'oils for bullet through the lungs; a f-ergeant of New Orleans; a private of i'an Francisco, and a private of New York. In the legion's brilliant bayonet charges on the Sommo three out of the four battalion commanders were Killed, the remaining one, Comman dant Weddell, an Englishman, having been decorated with the Lnglon of Honor for his bravery. Numerically, the legion has nif feicd heavily tlnco the beginning of tl e war, owing to the largo number of volunteers who have boon ic ousrcl in order lo return homo and light with their own armies. Thn Italians, for example, returned homo when Italy declared war; the Oiceka at the moment of Oreok mobilization, and the Roumanians with tl.olr coun try's entrance into tho conflict.
