BILL has been placed on the bal lot of the coming election by the Klamath Commercial Club, asking! one' quarter mill from the general tax levy for the support of the club. This! lucaiiB iwtrutj-iivt; veuis un u luwusuim dollars, or about fifty cents to a dol lar a year for the average farmer and business man of the county. It ap pears that a general tax method has been inaugurated in other sections. and is working successfully. The! home organtation has been supported in the past mainly by business men of the city who have given generously to aid a work which they considered to be a benefit to the community. The Commercial Club has been established and In running order for more than a year. It has undertaken and in some instances completed work which is ex pected of organisations of this kind. In the Strahorn railroad, the proposed beet sugar factory, the reservation opening movement and the Lava Beds roads, we find commendable results among the larger things undertaken, in addition to the multitude of small er enterprises In which It Is involved. The Klamath Commercial Club Is gen erally conceded to be a live body, and its work has proved satisfactory to those 8UDDortina it. The voters of j the county now have a chance to de cide whether such results as have been achieved are worth a fraction to them In the future what they have been worth to a few in the past. One thing is certain, if such work is worth continuing, it should be continued at the expense of all whq share Its bene fits rather than by a loyal few upon whom the drain becomes burdensome. The club has shown what it can do and what may be expected of it, add people are not asked to vote on a questionable enterprise. If carried, the revenue becomes more dependable and plans for its work can be laid and carried out more effectively than for-.-merly, when the constant shifting of membership made Its income uncer tain. The financial assistance re quested will, if voted, be expended under the supervision of the counjy commissioners, insuring voters against improper expenditures. We believe that where single and factional efforts will prove fruitless, concerted action will win; that things necessary for the county's best interest can best be secured by a central organization working unitedly for that purpose, and that those receiving benefits should share in their payment. mont quarries the vlllago of Douau mont, the forests of Chapttrc, Fumln, Chcnola, taufee and Calllette In quick succession. BY HENRY WOOD (United Press Staff Correspondent) VERDUN, Via Chantllly, Oct. 30. Battling in rain mists and clouds of smoke, the French recaptured Fort Douaumont in less than three hours In the brilliant offensive that swept the Crown Prince back from Verdun. The entire operation was witnessed by General Joffre, commander-ln chief of France's armies. From an observation post in one of the Verdun, forts, the correspond ent watched the French Infantry launch the attack at 11:40 Tuesday morning, after three days of unpre cedented artillery preparation. The rain, the fog, and the constant explo sion of shells hid men from sight, but it was possible to follow the French advance by the shirting of the car riage fire, especially that of the Ger mans, which first came from Frelde Terre and then was forced to shorten upon Thlaumont and then Douau mont as the French swept all before them. Telephone calls from other French forts kept us informed of the French advance. First, at 12:30 Molly ra- ,VMe was captured, the voice over the telephone said. Why Vote Pendleton $125,000 For something we already po jesses a State'Normal School tor . Eastern Oregon Why vote an annual tax of one-twcnty-iirtb of a mill for a Pen dleton Normal when one-fortieth of a mill would provide ample main tenance for the Weston Normal? Do you want to be out of pocket f 325,000 in ten years? This Is th? approximate sum that a Pendleton Normal would cost over and above the cost of the Weston Normal, allowing for a nominal increase In state valuations Every man, woman and child Jn Oregon is annually taxed 1 30, according to A. H. Harris, a Portland writer. Taxes for all pur poses in 1916 reached the enor-mous total of $22,000,920.94. SchooU alone cost $7,000,000. Why toss tax money aVjiy by 'granting Pen-' dleton's absurd demands? ' Why Not Reopen the Weston Plant? It's ready for use, and consists of four buildings and ten acres of ground. It has been recently Inspected and approved by such prominent architects as Beezer Bros, or Seattle nnd Osterman & Slebert or Walla Walla. Beezer Bros, say that $2,000 properly ex pended on the principal building would bring it to an "almost perfect condition." These substantial taxpayers, officials and men -or affairs denounce the Pendleton scheme as one or "extravagant roily": J. M. Banister, mayor or Weston; Homer I. Watts, Mayor of Athena; B. B. Richards, recorder of Athena; H. A. Barrett, merchant, Athena; C. A. Barrett, 'state senator, Athena; H. B. Lee, ex-county commissioner, Milton; J. F. Slover, merchant, Freowater; C. D. Hobbs, mayor or Milton; H. L. Frazler, ex-county commissioner, Milton. Why did not Pendleton confine her bill to a normal school prop osition? Why does she seek to "validate" Instltutons that are firm ly and lawfully established? Is it not clear that this Is a vote-catching device? Isn't it "log rolling" of the rankest, variety? And finally, would you care to send your children to a town Impregnated with Round Up atmosphece? Isn't It a fact that a great Round Up town Is for that very reason a poor stato school town? Would you want your children ta carouse, ranee and gamble in Happy Canyon or to even witness Its wanton revelry? (Paid advertisement, F, D. Watts, -. E. O. DeMoss, Wra. MacKenzle, R A.
