Drawing their encircling noose in from the west, north and southwest, the French have advanced their lines at sevjeral points to wltliln a fqw huu dred yards of the important town of Chaulnes. The town was already seriously menaced by Che French advance oit Tuesday when German positions were taken on a three mile front.- TheJ French are pocketing it in the same manner In which the allies drove tho Germans out of Combles. Chaulnes, to a certain extent, holds the same Important relation to the German line south of the Somme ns did Combles north of the river. Itis'noar Deniconrt, though the French a point of support, the Junction of several important hlghwajs, and its capture will enable the French to dominate the surrounding country for several miles. Aerial torpedoes and secretly dug trenches gave wonderful aid to-ihe French in their movement to encircle Chaulnes. On Monday I visited tho first line trenches near Denicourt, three miles northeast of Chaulnes, to watch preparations for the great at tack launched on Tuesday. a new trench, running parallel to the ,,. .i.i t, , .i., trench thai French Infantry was tined to make the attack, thus reduc ing the width of the fire zone it was necessary for the soldiers to cross be fore reaching the German trenches. While the usual terrific artillery preparation was going on, the French were systematically destroying tho German wlro entanglements with their new aerial torpedoes. These they launched from little trench mortars. Unlike the screaming, whistling of the shells, the passage of these tor pedoes Is noiseless, but they are vis ible to the naked eye throughout their entire course.
