Eastern Oregon will betaken la

against Secretary of State Olcott to
collect something like J35.000, which is
claimed Baker county Is entitled to
from tke sales of timber on the govern
ment forest reserves.
There seems to be a feeling among
Eastern Oregon counties, where the"
largeat portion of tke forest reservs
are leeated. that these counties are not i
recelrlng tketr full portion in tke dls
trieatloB of the aaoaey receiTed froa
tke sales of Umber. An act of congress
provides that 25 per cent received
from sales shall he paid over to tke
state to be distributed far school and
road purposes, as the legislature
shall provide.
Tke manner of distributing this
money Is in question. The act of con
gress provides that It akall he appor
tioned amonx the counties in which
the reserve is located In proportion to
tke area of tke reserve lying within!
the county. It is claimed that tke
money has been distributed among all
the counties of the state la proportion
to tke area of forest reserve contained
tkerea. Irrespective of tke location of
tke reserve from which tke timber waa

ized accounts would serve as'a partial
substitute for experience.
Contrary to the usual understanding
of the matter the subject of farm ac
counts is not new, but was discussed
freouently by the ancients, especially
Pliny aad Cieero.

the chairmanship of the republican
state central committee, Judge Charles
L. McNary said that he would do all
that he could to aid in the election of
the state and national tickets. Judge
McNary was elected at a meeting held
by the committee In Portland Satur
day.
"I had no intimation of my selection
as chairman until alter the act was
accomplished, and 1 shall do all I can
to assist in tho election of the splendid
state and national tickets chosen by
the electorate in the open primaries
last May." he said. "I appreciate most
keenly the value ot a united repub
lican party having for Its purpose the
restoration of American Ideals of hon
or and dignity abroad and the welfare
of the masses at home. Therefore, I
contemplate with pleasure the unifica
tion of the republican and progressive
parties.

the supreme court In 1913, and was de
feated in the primary election of 1914
by one vote by Justice Henry L. Ben
