ECRETART REDFIELD of the Department of Commerce, re ports with much gusto that our Jan uary, 1916, exports exceeded those ot January, 1915, by f62.000.000. Strangely enough, and a matter of less gratification to the American pro ducer, imports for January, 1916, ex ceeded those of January, 1915, by 62,000,000, being 8184,000,000 for the former and 8122,000,000 for the latter month. The exports were mainly ot mater ials to be used directly or indirectly for taking human life munitions ot war and no protectionist ever con templated the literal massacre of his foreign competitors. The Imports kvere of materials which, nnder nor mal conditions of trade, would throt tle domestic industries. Should the war cease next month there would be a coincident decline of exports, but the Imports would fall off little, if any, and would continue to rome in as long as a democratic near- free-trade law was on the statute books. A CRY FOR BOOSTERS By MARJORIE DELZELL Klamath County High School Student S WE all know, the Klamath country is a wonderful country; rich in scenic beauty as well as in re sources. Yet how many of us ever stop to think ot the thousands upon thousands of people in the United States who know nothing at all ot our country, our people, or our city. These people live In countries de void of scenery and places for recrea tion. Many of them are practically invalids because of the unwholesome climatic conditions, and they strug gle on through life, wretched and mis erable, because they do not know ot a country where both health and ai living can be obtained. California! appears to them as a salubrious para-i dUe. bat crowded with resorts in, which the expenses of living are be j yond the average purse, and they! know nothing ot Oregon's Klamath country, where they can have health, a living and recreation simply for the coming. Look at Colorado! Almost every little rock, tree or building is adver tised, and as a consequence Colorado (receives hundreds of dollars from tnnplBI, an tnvalMa Yt7t.tlA !.. .ill- mate is practicalaly the same as ours, ' her scenery Is not nearly so delight ful, and her charges are much higher! Then look at the thousands of people ' crowded into tiny Rhode Islands and New Jersey, while here is Klamath' county, big enough to bold both of! these states, and having only a pop-J ulatlon of about 10,000! Isn't it' about time for us to wake up and "get busy." We like to be thought of as an en ergetic, lively people, typical of the free Western life, but some ot the more Eastern states have us beaten when U comeilo boosting. Undoubtedly every grown person In this county knows some one family in another state. Then what a wonder ful amount of boosting could be ac complished, say, If each one of these persons, about 7,000, should write a good lively letter to only one family of their acquaintance, boosting Klam ath county? About 35,000 people would learn of our country through these letters, and these would tell oth ers, and great good might bo accom plished. At any rate, we all can boost at home, and Instead of going about with our mouths, ears and eyes shut, let us awaken to the beauties and resources ot this country, and boost for Its In terests as well as our own. e Scattered Shots WHAT ARE YOU dolna to make this a better communltyto live In? !
