1 HARLES F. STONE'S article in
' yesterday's Herald, calling for
action In the matter of a better road
to Crater Lake, has already brought
about results. One man has sub
scribed $25 in cash, Fort Klamath
men say their section will almost
meet the county halt way In labor and
teams, and Klamath Falls men are of
the opinion that all who turn out on
"Good Roads Day" this year should
work for the Improvement of the road
between Klamath Falls and Crater
Lake.
Crater Lake Is an attraction bring
ing people from all parts of the world.
It Is geographically Klamath's prop
erty, but the tourist has no senti
mental Interest In such a thing; he
wishes to get there by the best road.
If Klamath wishes to retain her rep
utation as the favorite gateway to
Crater Lake, real constructive work Is
Imperative Just as soon as the weath
er permits.

SOON the unending stream of btrd
life will set In northward. Al
ready the warblers that have been
spending their winter In northern1
South America are doubtless on their
way to their northern haunts, some of
them In far-off Alaska. Bobolinks
that last fall made their long trip
away down into southern Brazil must
be on their way back to entertain us
with their exhuberant wing song dur
ing the warm days ot summer. Cer
tainly these songsters who come so
far from the Southland to make their
nests among us deserve our affection
ate care and protection.
Nature study is one ot the most
stimulating of employments, and bird
study Is the most inspiring branch of
nature study. Love of nature, love
of birds and love of fellowmen are a
trinity of affections that are early de
veloped in the mind and heart of the
child reared in the country If his
training Includes a study of nature In
her larger aspect and a development
of his observatlve faculties to a point
where he has "eyes to see and ears
to hear."
But the birds have a practical value
as aids to the cause of agriculture, for
they destroy millions of .insect ener
mies and consume tons of noxious
weed seeds. If the birds should fail J
in a single year to find their way
northward , agriculture In the great
north temperate zone would suffer In
estimable damage; Indeed it has been '
declared that without the aid of the1
birds man would face starvation, be-j
cause he would be helpless against
the onslaughts of his insect enemies.
Be that as It may, the birdB deserve
the friendship and protection of man,
and wherever their beauty and worth
are appreciated steps are being taken
to provide them with nesting places'
and with food in times of scarcity. In
fact, many birds that now migrate
will remain In a given locality all the
year is they are supplied with food
during the winter period. The pleas
ure that young people especially de
rive from kindness of this sort is in
itself evidence of growth In character
and advancement along paths ot
civilization and refinement.
