'SALEM, Ore.. Jan. 27. Tuesday.
March 7, the anniversary of the birth
of Luther Burbank, will be observed
with exercises In the public schools of
the state, according to an announce
ment made by State Superintendent
of Public Instruction Churchill to
day. i
"It swjaii particularly fitting in
connection with our agricultural and
Industrial club work in the public
schools, that we should have a Bur-
bank day, and with proper prepara
tion and exercises familiarize the
boys and girls with the man who has
accomplished so much for human
progress," said the superintendent In
making the announcement "When
term boys' learn that soil chemistry,
horticulture, stock breeding and sim
ilar studies require as much brain
activity as do electricity, law and
medicine, and that Burbank Is
classed with such men as Edison, and
has an Income greater than most
lawyers, they will hesitate before go
lag to the cities to become flunkies
for corporations jwhose managers
will consider them only as so much
property."

In today's news is a statement from
Major General Wood that in Its pres
ent condition, the American navy
would be wlped-ott.the.seaB by a first
class power in sixty, days or less. New
York could be taken with ease, and
the people of the East driven, de
fenseless, into the Middle West. He
strongly urges preparedness.
This Is the moral pointed by the
gieat nine reel Vltagraph feature,
The Battle Cry of Peace," soon to
be shown here preparedness, not
for war, but against war. From a
patriotic point of view, this screen
should be shown In every town and
city In the United States until the
cause of national defense which
means defense of home and hearth
and relatives as well as defense of
forts and trenches has been given
au Impetus that -will carry It on to
victory. ,t
It Is the most striking battle Him
of the age, in that it Illustrates what
would happen It any first-class for
eign power, such as England Is to
day, or France, or Germany, should
attack the United States.
The scenes are'harrowlng, but they
ar not overdrawn. They might even
be used to illustrate the latest re
port of the secretary of the navy a
volume every page of which Is a
warning to the American people that
there is no military establishment to
day on which .American security
against invasion can be based.
