Washington Post declares that mil
lions of dinner pails that were empty
under republican administration are
now full and overflowing under the
democratic president, and after four
years of a democratic control of fed
eral legislation; also that "no party
ever in power in this country has pro
duced such prosperity as now exists."
Those two declarations axe made in
an editorial which declares that "the
decision of the allies to carry on the
war has added stimulus to war or
ders," that the crest of the ware of
orders has not yet passed, that there
will be fully two millions more men
on each side in line of battle by next
March, than there were last March,
and that the allien will draw their
suppliles from the United States.

wheel chair bearing a couple of old

of the once gem city.
High over the wondrously beauti
ful Court of the Universe and Court
of Abundance, circled lazy sea gulls
from off the bay. Around the build
ings a flock of frightened doves rose
as now and then the tread of a visitor
startled their calm. Empty foun-
tains rusted, and the palaces, some of i.
them, are still standing. But they
are showing signs of decrepitude; the
plaster walls are chipped; the brll-'
llant banners drooped and faded In

Its declaration that many millions
of dinner pails were empty from 1907
until a democratic administration
filled them will make boards of asso
ciated charities and the managers of
public bread lines in our cities won
der why there was such an enormous
demand for their assistance In 1913
and 1914, as compared with the previ
ous years wben these many millions
of dinner palls were supposed to be
empty.
And yet the Post is undoubtedly
correct In saying that "no part'y in
power In this country has produced
such prosperity as now exists." Cer
tainly the democratic party has not
produced such prosperity as now ex-
sits. Nor will the republican party
claim that It has produced such pros
perity as this.
Six months ago we had suffered two
ears of democratic administration.
The first year and a half of that ad
ministration was characterized by in
dustrial depression throughout the
length and breadth of the United
States. The outbreak of the 'Euro
pean war cut off imports and created
ja new demand for exports, thus sav
ing American industry from utter de
struction. Even so late aa six months
ago we could not fully realize to what
extent the European war would re-es
tablish the industrial enterprises
which had been demolished by demo
cratic economic policies.
