men claimed they were physically un
fit to serve their nation by going into
trenches.

maximum recruiting age. He didn't
look it.

ernment in the lurch by quitting his
routine task in the postofflce.
Another crossed bis heart and
swore he was lame, then limped
away, though previously be bad not
limped. Tho fourteenth man Ques
tioned claimed to be a policeman
though he was In civilian clothes.
The next man, six feet of solid
cockney, sneered at the question.
"You're askln' me to enlist?" he
queried. "D'ye think that twelve
sblllln's sixpence a week and ration
allowance is enough for man wlfeT
No, none of the army for me."
"There's the answer," said the re
cruiting officer. "They simply won't
go. That's why we're going to have
conscription. A majority of the re
cruits now are the dregs, the loafers
who join to get their meals. Middle
class men will not go until they are
shoved. We're not getting enough
fighting men."
