before, and ,yfct nearly all sections
have had unusually quiet times, fac
tories closed and man out of work.
This Illustrates in a striking man
ner that what we really need to bring
prosperity la payrolls, thousands of
men at work receiving a pay check
eTery Saturday night. These are the
people who distribute tha money
among the hundred and one different
businesses that have been languish
ing for want of trade.
We need the farmers' crops to live
on, nut in addition we need the .re
sults of labor to build and develop
with. The little flurry of good times
in the East has all been caused by the
opening of a few factories to supply
war orders. The West has not profit
ed to such an extent, as all it had to
veil waa produce, the production of
which did not give steady employ
ment to a great number of people.
What we need now Is an affirma
tive policy of encouragement, both
state and national, toward all lines
of industry.
Throw off the shackles of hamper
ing legislation that has brought a
stop to the wheels of industry. En
courage, Instead of discourage, the
investment of capital in railroads and
water power development. With these
till! come the. factories, for they go
hand in hand one cannot thrive
without the other.
A man with, the energy, nerve and
ability to start an Industry in a com
munity, whether It be a saw mill em
ploying ten man or a business em
ploying a thousand, should be given
a vote of thanks by the state.
Wouldn't such a policy tend to en
courage the development of a new
country?
