Farmer Hay
Winter Months Wisely
Uulteil ivom Service
WA8IIINQTON. I). C. Oct. '";., ,,,,,,,.,.,,,,,, i0ify
So long as good weather ronllnie In i
tho fall most farmers ir so busy
wllh thronhlnx. corn and potato har
vest, fall Reeding, hauling, etc.. mm
loss imjiortnnl work lx usually poat-
poned until winter. However, tho
exercise of a little thought and. the
expenditure of n few tnluutos at this
soason will often save not only hours
but daya later when the weather and
roads get bad and outdoors work Is
Impossible.
Then tho odd jobs of overhauling
the farm equipment, repairing, paint
ing, etc.. which haw been put off until
a slack season, will require attention.
But, all too often the necessary ma
terials will not be on head, and tho
work will be delayed until It Is pos
sible to make a trip to town, and not
Infrequently It remains undono until
the busy season the following year,
when necessity demands it.
A list should be made of tho things
that will be wanted ror this work. It
will only take a tow minute to Jot
them down as they are brought to tho
mind, and then on the next trip to
town they may be bought and set
aside so they will be ready when they
are wanted. The conditions of tho
different macblnea which will, or
should be, overhauled should be not
ed, and the parts which will need to
be replaced purchased. Then there
are tho odd Job of repairing build
ings, fences, gates, etc., which will
require lumber and nails; there is no
need to make an extra trip for them
when wanted they may be brought
home the next time a load Is taken to
town. Likewise the lumber and bard
ware for the .small Jobs ot construe
tion which should bo done before
spring. Also the paints, oils, putty
and brushes which will be required
In painting tho varloua farm wagons,
Implements, Inside woodwork, furni
ture, etc. And, above all, tho neces
sary materials for tho Improvements
you have been planning for tbe house
should bo obtained so that they can
be completed this winter and not have
to wait another year.
Everyone knows bow much more
satisfactory It Is to have the neces
sary equipmeat ready to perform a
piece of work when an opportunity
presents, then to get started on it and
then find that It will have to be post
poaed until a trip can be made to
town, which, even if the roads are
good and tho trip 'can be made at
once, means a loss ot tlmo and added
expense,
It is astonishing how much can bo
accomplished on rainy days or dur
ing slack times, when the tools and
materials are at hand, and there
should be no dlBcullty in overhaul
ing practically every farm Implement
during the winter season, and have
them ready for next season's work.
The value of those "stitches In time"
Is frequently oat of all proportion to
the small amount of time they re
quire. Aside from the satisfaction of
having each Implement In flrstclass
shape when It Is needed, there Is the
actual saving accomplished by avoid
Ing having horses and hired help
standing Idle while repairs are being
made, which tnturn, frequently means
a loss of part of acrop.
It is useless to ao Into detail con
corning the many Jobs which can bo
accomplished with proft during the
winter months; there are plenty of
them which will occur to the farmer
who will spend a few minutes in con
slderlnR the matter.
Much of this year's wheat crop has
so high a moisture content that spe
cial treatment before storing Is very
necessary to Insure Its keeping In
good condition. Tests conducted by
the United States Departmeat of Ag
riculture, however, have demonstrat
ed that la aot always necessary to put
such wheat through a commercial
drier, and that by mixing blgh moist
ure and low moisture wheat together
tbe damp wheat can be put Into good
condition for storage. In these tests,
a carload of white wheat from the
Pacific Coast, containing 9.7 per cent
moisture, was mixed with a carload
of eastern wheat tasting 16.1 per coat
In moisture. This difference of 6,4
per cent la taa moisture content was
reduced tea days after tka mixing to
only 0.6 per osnt. Ia tko course of
the transfer of tko moisture from the
red to tbe white wheat ao appreciable
change in temperature waa detected.
Tbe information obtained from the
tests will greatly facilitate, it to said,
tbe handling of wet wheat this year.
Millers can do away with part of the
extra work ot drying wot wheat by
