Fall Calve IVrst Vor Early Bee
(By R. B. Reynolds)
Walter M. Pierce. Union county
farmer and stock raiser, member of
the Board of Regenta ot the Oregon
Agricultural college, haa atarted a
practice of raising fall calve Instead
of spring calves with very good suc
cess. His pun or aaaaiiag taeea
calves Is to have them dropped along
about November. The cows are thaa
placed la covered sheds and fed all
the alfalfa hay .that thy will, con
sume until the following spring. Dur
ing this tlm th calf Is so small that
It will eat grass If there la any, and
It also baa the advantage or belag
kept Indoors during the winter time.
About the first ot April, the cow
with her young calf Is turned out oa
the mountain ranges. Here, due to
the greea grass, the milk flow of the
cow Is very much Increased. The calf
now being a few months old will be
able to handle thla Increase without
difficulty. The calf runs on tho range
until about the first ot July whan
It Is taken on new mown meadows or
alfalfa or clover patches.
In thla manner the calf avoids the
shortage of pasturo during the drier
montha ot the summer. Also the calf
Is weaned at a time when the cow
will dry up more quickly when put
back Into the mountains on the dry
feed.. From the alfalfa pasture or the
meadows the calves are turned Into
the atubble fields and allowed to run
there until late la the fall whea they
are put Into lota aad fed all the al
falfa hay they will eat. Hoat of the
calves are blng sold from IS to IS
months of age.
Get a small package ot Hamburg
Breast Tea, or ss the Oaraan folks
call It, "Hamburger Brest Thee," at any
pharmacy. Take a teblsspooaful of the
tea, put a cup of boiling water upon
it, pour through "a sieve aad drink a
teacup full at aay thee during the
day or before retiring. It Is the most
asTsctlve wsy to break a cold and cure
grip, as it opens the pores of the skin,
relieving congestion. Also loosen the
bowels, thus breaking ap a eold.
Try it the next time yoa aster from
a eold or the grip. It is taexpeasive
aad entirely vsgstsbli, therefore safe
aad harmless.

being given a thorough trial aad
while It Is especially designed aa a

la determining whether the dairy
cows are belag fed satisfactory ra-

other things thaa their eteet upon
the quality of butter should be con-

amount of butter fat produced, and
the decree of completeness aad with
which the butter fat is recovered
