It was promised and It was admitted that we should hare it by District Agent Smith oa his list visit over the road on the regular train here. On his previous trip he came in on a special, and so did not see the actual conditions as they are. On his second trip here he came In i the dally, and then he realised what the people of this county need. and what they are getting. It la stated on good Information that the sleeper i recently placed on No. 40 is finding pood patronage. It is full coming and fcolng, several local people have at tempted to secure berths on the way out, but were unable to, as the car was filled up. The inability of the single train now to reach here on time puts this country just about twelve hours further behind than it is already. But a portion of the mall is distributed, or it so, so late doe to the lateness of the train, that it cannot be secured until the next morn ing. TYPHOID FEVER THE STATE BOARD OF HEALTH feels partlcalarly proud of the record of this state in the matter of typhoid fever. In 1910 there were 172 death from typhoid fever; in 1914, cer tainly with a greater population, there were 63 deaths. Figures compiled In morbidity statistics give the mortality rate from typhoid fever in the United States as from M to 29 per 100,000 pop tuaiioa. Taking the population of Oregon at 700,000. the deaths in 1914 would be less than nine per 100,000, a rate that we believe to be lower than in any oth er state. This has been made possible through a campaign of education in the matter of water supplies. Not only municipal, but supplies in rural com munities are incomparably better than five years ago. In the few instances where municipalities draw their water from contaminated sources, modern purification plants have been Installed that are apparently furnishing excel lent results. There yet remains much to be done. The most common sources of con tamination at the present time are the various springs, mountain resorts and coast towns, where people go to search of -health and recreation during the va cation period. The possibilities of anil' typhoid inoculation developed during ine past rew years nave Been one or the great triumphs of medicine. Out of it wil) di rectly grow, It is stated, a policy to be followed in the coming session of con-1 gress. This is a statement made byi Senator Tillman,, chairman of the sen-! ate committee on naval affairs, when. be was invited to take part "The purpose of the conference is the beginning .of the formulation of definite measures and plans to be placed before congress at its coming session in obedience to public opinion aroused in favor of preparedness for war. I predict without hesitation that every man at the conference will back President Wilson in any measure he may advocate for increasing our na tional defenses. The present war has taught us the need of being prepared. We want to be prepared not bo much for war as against war. At the confer ence I shall advocate strongly a larger navy. We need many more submarines of the type which has proved must suc cessful in the European conflict I be lieve this government should also have many more cruisers of the fastest type possible to be built But mainly the submarine has become the great factor In naval warfare, and we should be alive to Its possibilities. The storage battery Invented by Thomas A. Edison, I am told by naval experts, will be a great asset to our submarines, making them more efficient and less dangerous to their crews. In that the battery does not generate chlorine gas. "Then, too, we must provide for the purchase, manning and care of a fleet of aeroplanes. I do not favor a large standing army, but I am strongly In favor of training many more army offi cers than we do, and I favor, also, mil itary training for boys and youths In Kchools and colleges."
