SAN FRANCISCO. Sept 3. Silvio
retlroMl, the South American aviator
making flights at the exposition, had a
most miraculous escape from death
yesterday afternoon, when he fell In
his monoplane from 1,000 feet In the
air Into the bay.
He was sailing In full view of thous
ands of spectators at the fair grounds
when the engine of his monoplane
failed, machine and man plunging
down.
The thousands of spectators, includ
ing his wife, were contain that Petiros
bl wns killed, but in falling he man
aged to unstrap himself from his seat,
and was found on top of his machine
unhatmed after It struck the water by
his rescuers. His escape la regarded
as miraculous.
This is the second accident of tats
nature that has occurred In the tost
three weeks at the exposition. Charles
Nlles, who alternates with Petlroasi in
flying for the exposition visitors, fell
into the bay when his engine went
wrong on his trial flight He had un
strapped himself also, but his Jaw waa
fractured in the fait
