TIMBER LOSS FAVORABLE
D EPORTS recently received by the
XV Western Forestry and Coaaerra
Uon Association from all protective
agencies In the Northwest, show prac
tically bo loss of timber throngh for
est Ares np to the present time.
Favorable weather conditions and
careful preparations for the season are
the chief factors which have so far
made for a clean record on the part
of patrol organlxatlons.
Following the plan of previous sea
sons each protective agency began,
well in advance of dry weather, to get
Its territory in the best possible shape
for successfully combatting any fires
which might become started.
Additional lookout points were
equipped, telephone lines extended and
repaired, new trails constructed, and
every effort made to secure the best
possible co-operation between the vari
ous patrol organisations. These efforts
are now bearing fruit In the prompt
dtectlon and suppression of an fires
which become started.
Although the beginning of August
saw conditions much more favorable
than those of a year ago, there Is still
time for the woods to become dry, and
only the greatest care and vigilance
will prevent fires from starting during
the next few weeks.
Oregon experienced no fires worthy
of mention during July. A few fires
escaped aa a result of slash burning,
but-were speedily extinguished with
out loss of green timber. About 800
wardens are on duty outside of the
national forests, and this number will
probably be slightly Increased if rains
are not forthcoming within the next
few days. The need for strict enforce
ment of the forest laws has been espe
cially emphasized this season, and a
campaign to eliminate the smoke
nuisance has been vigorously carried
on.
Idaho has experienced a few small
fires, none of which have caused loss
of timber.
Montana reports a most favorable
season aa compared with last year.
The Northern Montana Forestry Asso
ciation baa had no fires in its trrl-
tory. In spite of present favorable
conditions the utmost care Is urged by
all agnclea to prevent damage during
the next month. August and early
September can be counted on to be
dry, and a few hot days are all that Is
required to produce a serious fire has

THE FOOL AND OUR FOREST
DOLLARS
E. T. Allan
Goodbye to the fool with the empty
gun;
Forgotten his bid for fame.
Though he kills his friend, it only
counts one,
And that, nowadays, Is tame.
The fool who playfully rocks the boat
Is on the front page no more.
He may rank high with tke fools afloat
But his glory Is gone ashore.
There's the fool with woman, the fool
with wine.
And the fool who games with
strangers,
And the Joy-ride fool (he does well in
his line
Ily combining these ancient dangers.
But they're all still down in the primer
class
Mere novices taking a flyer-
Compared with the prize-taking crim
inal aas,
Tke fool la the woods wltk a Are.
A few hearts break for the deeds
they've done
In their pitiful amateur way,
But are slays dozens where tbey slay
OBO,
And scoargos a state in a day.
For the ruined home and the smoke
leas staek,
Aad the worker aaomployed,
Know a koaarad years shall never
The things that his autch destroyed.

THE RESIGNATION OF MI8S 8TRA
CHAN, DEFEATED CANDIDATE
FOR PRESIDENT OF ASSOCIA
TION, NOT RECEIVED
OAKLAND, Aug. 24. The teachers
attending the annual convention of the
National Educational Association are
mystified by the failure of Miss Graco
C. Strachan's resignation from tbo or
ganization to reach Secretary Durand
W. Springer.
MIsb Strachan says that her resig
nation, bearing data of August 19, was
mailed. Springer says he has not re
ceived It He suggests that possibly
one of Miss Strachan's friends Is with
holding it in an effort to persuade her
to remain in the association.
David Starr Jordan, chancellor of
Stanford University, and. president of
the association, said:
"There Is not any upheaval in the
association not oven a rlpplo. This Is
simply the case of one making an ef
fort, or a series of efforts, to be elected
and falling."
The Incoming and outgoing officers
of the N. E. A. were the guests of the
Oakland Commercial Club at a ban
quet at the Claremont Country Club.
