clflc exposition at San Francisco. Con
scqucntty tho most elaborate precau
tions are being taken to Insure the
safn transportation of tho priceless
rollc.
i:nry precaution will bo taken by
tho Soiithorn Pacific In transferring
tho bell across tho bay from Oakland
to San Francisco. A special barge
will deliver It to the San Francisco
freight slip, where a special freight
car and switch engine will be wait'
ing to toko It to Third and Townsend
streets. Hero it wilt be placed on a
truck and carried through the streets
of the city to the fair grounds.
Tho total mileage covered by the
Liberty Bell's westward Journey Is
n,234. The averago speed per hour
will bo twenty-eight miles, the rail
roads handling the movement having
decided that to haul It faster might
endanger its safety.
During stops booklets containing
tho history of the boll, cards with a
plcturo of tho rcllcc nnd buttons alio
containing a plcturo of the bell and
tho American flag will bo distributed
to the children. It will tako hundreds
of thousands of theso souvenirs to
supply tho demand. To the governors
and mnyors, tho history of tho bell in
small bound volume will bo presented.
Governors hate been Invited to Jour
ney with the bell through their .re
spective states.
The train will arrive In San Fran
cisco Friday night, July 1C, and Sat
urday, July 17, will Be Liberty Bell
Day at tho exposition. Early in the
morning tho relic will be conveyed to
its place in tho Pennsylvania- building
on the exposition grounds, where ex
ercises will bo held.
The bell will leave San Francisco In
November, nnd will return by the
Southern route, through Los Angeles,
San Diego', Arizona and Texas. The
details of tho return trip have not yet
been completed, but it Is virtually cer
tain that the special train will go
through St. Louis, Indianapolis nnd
Cincinnati.
After each return of the bell to
Philadelphia there has been a move
ment started to prevent the precious
metal from leaving the city again.
Tho crack In it haa been slowly ex
tending, and thero has been fear that
In Its Journey the bell might split In
two. Opposition to Its leaving tho
city on this trip was bitter, but the
city councils vote1 thnt it belonged
to tho American people, nnd that op
portunities to view It should bo given
whenever possible.
Sending the bell to the Western
const will cost tho city of Philadelphia
$75,000. The escorting committee of
twenty-six conncllmen will pay their
own expenses.
The four policemen who will con
stantly guard tho bell were specially!
picked for their fitness. Each Is
