Calvin S. White of the State Board of Health, of the manufactured and tho natural ice from sample sent him by Or. Truax, city health officer of this city. Mr. Campbell states that no samples of his Ice has been taken by Dr. Truax. While I waa not with Dr. Truax on either occasion when ho took the samples, yet I have full confidence In his Integrity and Judg ment, and am qulto sure that he took fair sample from both Mr. Campbell and ourselves. Mr. Campbell also states that the natural Ice ho has was taken from the west side of the lake. while that of tho Independent com pany was taken from the east aide. which is practically correct. We, bow ever, were caruful to go far out Into the lake, where there Is always run ning water, while on tho opposite aide, where hla was taken, is a bay, where there la no current at any time, and where dead flsb, etc., would naturally gather If there were any. which, bow. ever. Is quite Improbaol during the Ice harvesting sesison. When we went Into the Ice business here we had heard a good deal of knocking of the natural Ice, and wo wanted to know just how It stood as to purity, etc., compared with the manfusctured product. Therefore, we bad Dr. Truax take samples of both, and send to the state board of health for analyses, and the result waa ex actly as printed In the Herald. And If Mr. Campbell or anyone else ques tion!) tho authority or correctness of the testa they can call on Dr. Truax, who will verify them. Or, bettor still. have blm take otbor samples and have them tested, as we still bar lots of the same- Ice. and. Mr. Campbell. Mere statements from Mr. Camp bell or ourselves as to the psrlty or quality of our Ices are not very satis fying to the public, but an analysis of tho article must be correct, Mr. Campbell states again that his Ico Is made from the city water, which statement we do not question, but we recall that samples of the city water In the past have shown great Impur ity, and In tho process of manufac ture we can not see bow the manu factured Ice can be better than the water from which It Is made, being frozen In tanks, while on the other hand, we are told by scientific men that Ico freezing In the open forces the Impurities out as It froeses. Just as when a- bottle of Ink trasses the foreign matter Is forced to the bot tom, leaving the top practically clear. We aro also told that les will purify Itself within six months. This Ice of ours has been stored for six months, so must be practically pure now. We quite agree with Mr. Campbell that tho people of this city should look to the purity of Its waiter and tee, and should further use only the purest, and to that end we shall In sist on the health authorities making tests of tho Ico from time to time as the summer, advances and Impurities Increase. Wo ask for ourselves and the public a fair shako, and shall Insist that wo have It. INDEPENDENT ICE CO., By JAS. W. STRAW. 34-St ball today. "The fire on the "Dad" Wilson homestead started In the slashings there, and we, are fixing It up so It will not burn all summer. There are n number of logs In the vicinity, and If let burn It might con tinue to do so for some time, and eventually become serious." "Instead of maTchlng Into the woods, flashing your badge and showing your authority, It Is belter to vlilt the campers, make a good follow of yourself, slip them one of these tittle articles here and tell them we are fMnd to have them In the woods.
