A PLACE IX THE 8UX
GREAT stress has been laid on
Germany's desire fo have a
"place in the sun." Now, while at
present Germans and their enemies
are tlndlng a place In the grave, there
are millions of Americans who can
And a place In the sun.
During tho past winter, probably
more than 2,000,000 persons were
tdlo. and not because they wished to
bo. Had many of these unfortunates
had a place In tho sun they would
not have suffered from the Inconven
iences occasioned by idleness.
The greatest opportunity today of
fered to the people In America Is out
door life on the farm and In the
orchard. Land Is cheaper than It will
be In the future, and prices for all
'products of the soil are high. The
man who is pining away in tho city
can find health and wealth in the
open If he tries. There is where he
can find a place In the sun. and also
find an independence not to be found
in town or city.
While the country is adjusting
itself to the changed conditions and
while there is still the opportunity,
those not satisfied with the outlook
for the future should consider mov
ing to the country. Tou can find ev
ery comfort and convenience If you go
to the right place.
It would not be advisable for a city
family to go to any section where
there is little but wilderness, and
where there are neither good roads
nor neighbors, much less any com
mon conveniences.
I Hovvet er,. where life cut be made
north living the place in tl.e sun will
be found in tilling the soil. A small
farm tract, well cared for, will
produce enough to support a family
and leave a surplus. With health and
and strength, Is'nt this better than
drudgery in the city where the aver
ago person Is generally in debt and
without any assurance of permanent
employment?
Take your place In the bun.

Sherlock

Bomar Is a wandering phlloso-

"Now In Now York," said
Bomar, "snipe shooting Is great.

they're only good to chew. They

F1XDS BEET SUGAR GOOD
FOR CAXXIXG PURPOSES
(Herald Special Service)
OREGON AGRICULTURAL COL-,
LEGE, Corvallls, June 2. Now thati
the canning reason Is again opening
up, It is well to call the attention of
farmers and to others doing home
canning to the fact that beet sugar is -identical
in chemical composition to
cane sugar, and Is the equivalent of
it for sweetening purposes. A very
common prejudice against beet sugar
has existed In the past, and is hard
to remove, but according to analyses
made by Professor Tartar, agricul
tural chemist of the Oregon station,
there Is no difference In the value of
the two kinds of sugar.
The experience of a home canner
shows that fact. "I had always used
the best Hawaiian cane sugar, but
after reading a bulletin on the beet
ail gar I tried to get some to experi
ment with. So great is the prejudice
against it that I was unable to get
any in nearby towns. I had some sent
from a beet sugar factory and raado
quince and blackberry jelly with it,
and wmo with cane sugar, and had I
not labeled the two kinds I nor any
one else could have distinguished a
particle of difference between the re
sults. I also made a few jars of
blackberry jam and canned some
blackberries successfully with the
beet bugar."
