Umb Wooa Rock Springs Coal Extra on hill) Leave Orders at Square Deal Store AD FRANK WILLIAMS stood trial for the murder of Allen C. McLeod, tho treasury of Klamath county, none to corpulent as It Is, would have been drawn upon for several thousands of dollars. In addition to self-defense, Attorney Rcnner for the defense contended that his client Is tho son of n woman who has spent nearly three decades In a madhouse, and that the accused ii afflicted with homicidal mania. In his contentions to prove this, he would naturally have summoned wit nesses from many statee to testify, and both sides would have been com pelled to summon alienists, whose testimony is by no means inexpen sive. Besides these, there would be tho many other witnesses, the Jury, and tho other expenses. But Klamath county was saved all of this when Frank Williams en tered a plea of guilty to a charge of second degree murder. And the enas oi Justice were met just as completely by this as it an expen sive trial was held, and Williams convicted of first de"'ee murder. Life imprisonment Is the sentence in both cases. Too much credit cannot be given to W. H. A. Renner, Williams' at torney for convincing his client that this was the best method for him to pursue. And too much credit cannot be given District Attorney John Ir win for accepting the plea of second degree murder, instead of fighting for a verdict of first degree mur der. The Williams case will be a black blot upon the history of Klamath county for years, and despite all the statements the prisoner can make re garding how the homicide occurred by his acting in self defense, it will be regarded by nearly all aa a cold blooded deed, one of the kind that In some places causes enraged citi zens to take the law in. their own hands. But even from this sordid affair can consolation and pleasure bo drawn in the knowledge that Klamath county's bar has men who rise above the ambitions and onDor- tunltles for self-advancement bv the I successful trying of a celebrated case, and attain the same extent of repar ation for the crime as if the case was threshed out with enormous expense saddled upon the taxpapers.
