Pattcraon) The local newspaper Is the con necting link between the merchant and tho public Without this con necting link the merchant would And It much more difficult to reach the heart and pocketbook ot the buyer. There Is a strained relationship be tween the buyer and the .seller, and there is no denying that the loect paper does more to clarify the local market situation, and to produce good will on the part of tho local buyer toward the local merchant than any thing else. Every merchant profit thereby. Reed will may be of two kinds good will toward the mer chants generally, and good will which ia an asset in each business. Tho good will which Is an asset in a busi ness is but a part ot the general good will, and who does more to create' that general good will than the local paper? The local paper wins the confidence of its readers by giving the news in an honest way and supporting those things that tend to make a better community. Every enterprising mer chant, who advertises in the paper. shares In the confidence thus created in the paper, as It is natural for a reader to have confidence In ads that appear In a paper in which he has confidence. I The merchant should Inspire great er confidence in bis store and his goods by Judicious advertising. He can do so because advertising always reduces the cost of distribution and enables the merchant to sell cheaper.' A noted writer hits the nail on the head when he gives the advertiser this advice, which If followed would be immensely beneficial to the adver tiser: "Make your advertisements mor ally useful to the public, and educa tionally useful to the' public as well as materially useful. Tho greatest baseball war, one in comparison with which the fight be tween organlxed baseball and the Federal league wonld be unimport ant, Is threatened In the announce mept of Dave Fultx, president of the Baseball Players' Fraternity, that he has called a strike of all'members. rie 'said recently he had Issued a call for all baseball players to quit playing Wednesday unless the Na tional Commission receded from its order for Kraft to report'tothe Nash ville club. - Ban Johnson, president of the American League, who generally has Very much to say In cases 'of 'base ball trouble, at once blurted out that If a strike were called he would' have each of the parks of tho American League clubs closed" for the season, and there would be no more base ball in that league nntll next year. Johnson, however, hasn't power of this kind, and nothing llko that would be done without a vote of the hoard 'of directors. It would mean that the Federal League would at once Jump Into pop ularity and prosperity. Kraft was drafted last winter from New Orleans from the Brooklyn Na tional Club. The Nashville Club appealed to the National Commission, the ruling pow er In organlxed baseball, and the Na tional Commission upheld' Nashville's claim. The Players' Fraternity Is de termined to fight the plan by which ball players are int from one club to another or one It-ague to another whether they care to go or not. The farternlty took up the Kraft case and demanded that the player be restored to the Newark Clnb. The, demand was Ignored. After several futile, attempts to get actios, President Fultz declared a walkout of ball players. After the Issue of tho strike order, Fults said he hoped It would not be necessary. to resort to extreme meas ures. The controversy could be tem porarily settled if a major league team would purchase Kraft.
