RKNDBM AN OPINION THAT
PRBVBNTH YOUNG WOMAN
FROM HOLDING AN OFFICK
BALBM. Sept. It. In an opinion
rendered recently Attorney Oeaeral
Crawforda holds that If a couaty clerk
Is advised that any person nominated
for a county ofllce Is ineligible It Is
his duty not to place the name on tho
ballot; aad the ruling puts a damper
on the hopes of a young woman In
Jackson county who has ambitions to
become county school superintendent.
Evidently figuring that tke suffrage
amendment would nam at the general
oectlon. she became a candidate, and
now deelrea her name to go oa the
ballot Skould she be elected and the
suffrage amendment pass, the attor
ney general concedes she would be
able to qualify. As she Is not now,
however, eligible to oOce, the county
clerk can decline to put ker name oa
tka ballot, according to the attorney
general's ruling, and she will be un
able to make the race. The oplaloa
Is rendered at the request of the
county sckool superlntaadeat of Jack
son couaty.

One million women In the United
States have full political rights.
Utah, a suffrage state, baa the
largest proportion of home owners
of any state in the Union.
In Denver the women cast 66 per
cent of the vote In the large residence
wards, snd only 4 Mr cent In the
slum ward.
In moat ststes about 0 or (I par
rent of the men vote. In Wyoming
90 per cent of the women vote, la
Colorado 10 per ceat of the womea
register and 71 per cent vote, la
Idaho 40 per cent of tke total vote la
cast by women, though women an la
the minority In that stele.
In Colorado In the first eight
months after women ware enfranchis
ed more books on political acaaomy
and clvlra wen sold than la tke whale
twenty years previous.
In Seattle there were never 100
women devoting themselves to the
suffrage campaign, but 13,000 women
registered at tho first election. And
0 per cent of the women voting In
Seattle Ibis year were married women
of the "home."
Where women have voted the long-
eat divorce Is only one-eighth as great
aa la similar states wbsre they do not
vote.
About 30,000 women voted In Den
ver at the last election, and of these
only 400 could be connected with any
bad element.
There la no nation, no stale, no city
where women vote where the vote of
undeelrabte women even remotely ap
proaches thst of lbs womsn of goad
repute.
