The four horse chariot race was an Interesting feature of the afternoon. There were two entries, Dave Ken) on. with four of his transfer horses, und Guy Merrill, with four whites. Mer rill made an Ideal Den Har, and hand led his horses In true Roman style, but not being of thn Arabian breed, they were not quite fast enough for the Kcnybn steeds. Kenyon won by a good margin, and did not succeed in setting bis horses stopped until the second lap, although ho bad an us- distant to help him drive. The next event was the semi-finals In the bucking contest. All but four of the riders had bees eliminated. Pickett rode Skyrocket, Parker rode Hilly Duck, Judd was ol Black Dia mond, and Acord rodfl Phoenix with both feet out of the stirrups Harry Drown then attempted to ride Jim Jeffries, thn champion buck ing bull of the world, but lasted about four seconds. Parker rode Cheyenne and Acord showed his skill by staying with the champion bucker, Cyclone. CITY OFFICERS TO BE INSTALLED REGULAR MKKTIXG OF COUNCIL TOXIGHT GREAT INTEREST IN PROI1AULK APPOINTS Ol NEW MAYOR III EDUCATED, CUED NEW ENGLAND STATE United Press Service CLINTON, Mass., June 3. Forty pollcement charged 300 striking tex tile workers, who were massed In the yard of Our Lady of Rosary church. The policemen fired Into the crowd, killing one striker and wounding four women and three men. It Is thought two of the women are fatally wound ed. A dozen of the policemen were battered by stones, apparently the only weapons In the hands of the strikers. Tbe regular meeting of tbo fit council Is to be held tonight, at which time the new officers will probably bo Installed into office. Thoro has been a great deal of speculation as to who will be tbe new appointees under Mayor Nicholas. It Is said that new broom sweeps clean. It Is, even at this late hour, hard to say what kind of a sweep the new mayor will mako when It comes to making city appoint menu. Mayor-elect Nicholas made no pre-election promises. If he has made any since It Is hard to find out In which directions the plums will go. In discussing the matter Mr. Nich olas stated that he was aiming to get men whu would serve the best Inter ests of tho city, and who would ren der him every assistance In giving the city a good straight-forward business administration. With reference to tho charters. It Is probable that he wilt continue to operate under the Sanderson Instrument, aa he agrees with tho general belief that the com mission amendment can not by any stretch of the Imagination apply as an amendment to tbe Sanderson charter. In the meantime there Is a great deal of upeculatlon as to who will be appointed as chief of police and city attorney. The other appointments are of lesa Importance, and am excit ing less Interest. Tho officers of the city after the In stallation of the new officials will be: T. F. Nicholas mayor, A. L. Leavltt police Judge, J. W. Slemena treasurer. Ceunctlmen: First ward R. A. Al ford and J. F. Ooeller; Second ward C. II. Crlsler and F. D. Miles; Third ward J, H. Hamilton and C, II. Un derwood; Fourth ward rH. S. Owens and II. J. Savldge; Fifth ward Chas. McUowan and It. R. Doty. PARIS, June 3. For the first tlnio In twenty-five, year tho diplomatic business of tho United States In Franco Is being conducted In English. The predecessors of Ambassador My ron T. derrick used French. This Is not only a precedent up holding tbe new ambassador's change, but actual Instructions from Wash- InKton demanding the use of English at the embassy here. Not being fa miliar with the French language, as he hopes to be, Ambassador Horrlck bucked In true democratic form when friends suggested he learn a set speech In French to deliver beforo President Fallleres when banding In his letters of credence. He spoko In English. Looking up precedent In tho matter, the lawyer Instinct get ting the upper hand, tbe ambassador found he was acting upon actual In structions from his home govern ment. Official documents passing from the embassy to the French foreign office arc written In English. French trans lations accompany these documents, but tho translations are unofficial, and In case of misunderstandings, etc., tho democratic, but unofficial En glish originals are resorted to. Thn ambassador Is In thorough accord with the French officials, who seem to llko the Innovation, rather than oth erwlse.
