KLAMATH PALIA - '. OREGON
MONDAY, APRIIi IK. ItHII
gUKHTIO.VAIIt.K MKTHODS
A MOST active campaign has devel
oped In the Interest of the pass-
ago of tlio new Sanderson charter,
hlcli Is to be voted on tomorrow by
the people,, of Klamath Falls. He
tween twenty nnd thirty men have
been scouring tho city and making a
canvas In favor of tho new charter,
tactically nono ot these men aro
property owner or taxpayers, and
Just what their Interest might bo can
not bo ascertained. It Is quite gen
erally reported on the streets that
these men aro receiving pay for their
work, and If this Is true It should set
tho pcoplo ot this city to thinking.
Who Is It that is so Interested In tho
success ot the Sanderson charter that
they can pay men to work In Its sup
ort, and If the charter carries how do
they hope to get back these thousands
of dollar being expended?
It Is also reported that If the char
tor carries certain peoplo will spend
f 800,000 or so here this year In Im
provements. Wo do not know tho
sourco of this report, or whether It I
Inspired or not. but an assertion of
this kind Is silly, to say the least. Un
less tho property Itself Justifies tho
expenditure of large sums of money
these Improvements will not be made.
If It does then the money will bn
spent Irrespective ot the failure of
any charter.
Anotner argument being, made Is
that should the charter be defeated It
will be Impossible to mako any 'Im
provements on the streets this year.
This is nothing less than deliberate
falsifying of the facts. It Is tlmo the
people of this city got wise to them
selves and began to realise how they
aro being duped. The sewor work re
maining to bo done Is only a small
part of the Improvements that might
be mado. Why have no slops been
taken for tho paving of tho streets
which have been petitioned for by the
property owners? There Is no good
reason why 200 or more men should
not now be working on street pave
ments and producing a pay roll for
the city. There Is no limit under the
present charter for paving bonds. Tho
question of the legality of the char
ter baa not affected tho salo of Im
provement bonds, and In view of the
fact that 'the property owners of Oak
street and other sections of the city
are clamoring for street paving and
aro willing to pay tho coat, we would
ask wbya has tho work been delayed
until after the charter election?
There Is no one holding up tbo de
velopment work In Klamath Falls ex
cept the present city administration,
which Is asking tho adoption of the
new charter. By waiting until after
election before passing tho necessary
ordinances and taking the necessary
preliminary steps for the Improve
ment of these streets, It will mean
that no work can be actually under
way until late In the fall. Who Is re
sponsible for tbla condition? Tba
people should consider this matter
carefully, and then seo If It Is not the
administration, Itself, that la retard
ing, for a purpose, tba necesaary Im
provement of tha city, and the em
ployment of men who aro sadly In
need of work. Think It over, Mr.
Voter, and seo If you will bo benefited
by tho new charter.
There still remains a balanco of
155,000 under the present bond limit
that could be used for the completion
of sewer system. Why haa no at-
temp been made to put In thin system
or dlsposo of bonds for that purpose?
