OIIKtlON VVKIIXKHDAY, OCT. 18, 11)11 TUOl'SAMM) AfrTKH LAND TKUB Is an Item (rom tho San KrnncUco Chronicle of Octo ber ISth: "Heady to pnrtlclpnto n tho tlrtiw Ir.KS on October 21st (or 500,000 ncrcs ot land, tho last of the blR drawing In tho Hoscbud country In South Dakota, 10,000 iroicctlrc latil l)ti ers aro said to be now rnramped at Gregory, Dallas, Kaplil City nnl Chamberlain. The large number thus early on hand shows the Interest thut la taken In getting government land nt a nominal price." If the merchants, bankors, prods slon&l men and others In Klamath Falls read tho above carefully they may seo a good reason why tho Item should Interest them greatly. It says that the drawing of the llose bud lands Is the last of that reserva tion. Tho peoplo who are referred to as land buyers encamped at tho cities named In tho dispatch are people who want to bo homesteaders. They aro anxious to own a little land of their own, and to take ad vantage of tho liberal terms made hy a paternal government for tho benefit of any who have, not had tho advan tage to enable, them to buy 'It, or who havo been prevented, unfortu nately, by some other means, from obtaining a hold on somo terra flrmu for an abiding place. With 500,000 acres of land subject to entry the figure Is probably ap proximate but Is sufficient for the purposo of Illustration tho number of homesteads that may he offered nt 10 acres each Is 3,115. Thero Is a grrat deal of tho land which will not make very good homesteads, at a guess, say half. This will leavo n lit tle over 1,500 good homesteads, and with 10,000 peoplo gathered It shows that there are over six people to each avallble homestead. Each and every ono of tho 10,000 hopes to get some land, but Ave out ot six will mis It. The dato of the dispatch, which wss sent not later than October 13th, ihows that tho drawing scheduled for October list drew theso thousanda 11 1 people ten days before the 4o set for the event. This doe not reckon the largo number ot peoplo who will go Into tho town tho last few days before tho drawing, nor tako particu lar note of tho largo number who nr rived some tlmo before. For week before a homstead drawing tho hopeful peoplo gather at the seat of tho awards. Tbty como sometimes for hundreds and oven thousands of miles, and they have to live and apend some monoy while waiting. This means a great Income, temporary, true, to the towns In the vicinity ot tho land, especially the town at which the drawings aro. Then the hundreds who are success ful In getting land settle down and aro aa permanent asset, much greater. considering them la the long run, than tho temporary profit which I furnished by tho gathering of bun- drrds of hopeful ones which are dis appointed and have to go away, al though a fair percentago of thoso who do not draw are furnished a liveli hood through tho expansion caused by tho permanent settlors. If the Klamath Indian reservation enn t opened It will mean thousanda of ambitious homo hunters pouring nto thl neighborhood. Klamath Fall will reap tho benefit, doubly. There will be tbo good which will ac crue from the people who assemble and wait, for tho opening and that which will como by the hundreds who get new homo on government land, It' not going to hurt tho Indians, for they are taken care of. It's not LONG TIMBERS A SPECIALTY Vertical grained riooring.Cellliii, and Clear Native Fir for finish work, alio Lath am. Shinglei for, Fuel going tn hurt tho government, for tho government will In nil prolmhllity turn tho laud over to tho people soon er or Inter, nnny. And n point that must not ho overlooked Is that thl region, unllka ninny of tlione bark Knot which hnvu been subjected to public drnnlnnn, tins more home strnd lo offer tlmti tlio Klamath res ervation. There are tots of unclaimed home steeds In the counties ot t.nku ami Klamath which simply want taker. It does not mnko any difference (tow much nalso has already betn made In trlng to get peoplo to tako thorn, n MifQclciit blast has not been blown lo awaken their opportunities ttioso who would llko to tako adtatitago of the chance. Not only has tho Klam ath Indian reservation n r.nt area, Including somo very choice tracts, hut n very nice percentage ot tho overflow enn bo taken euro of on Ihu surplus mentioned.
