Th mercury la the thermometer which record th max- Imum temperature rise aa th day grows hotter, but, contrary to th ordinary Instrument, It doe not fall when the temperature cools, but remains at th highest point attained until th thermometor Is whirled and th mercury thereby forced to th lowest point again. The other thermometer, however, work la a directly opposite t manner. A bead of som chemical substance Is shaksa to the top of the Instrument, and aa th temperature grows colder It falls, but when the aun gets hotter It doe not ascend again, kut remains at th level reached durlag the coldest period, until It la ahakea to th top agala. la thla way th highest and the lowest temperatures are aa- certalned during the day. But If one wished to learn th temperature at any given time he could not do so by these Instruments, but would have to coasalt aa ordlaary thermometer.
