A number of Indians from tho
Klamath Agency were In the clty.pur
rhnalng supplies from tho merchants
here with money which has recently
been awarded them by the govorn
ment.
Several years ago when tho surrey
of the Klamath reservation was made
the boundaries which wero then speci
fied were so Indistinct that a new sur
vey was ordered, and when this had
been completed It wa discovered that
miirh land which had been supposed
to bo outside the reservation was In
reality Included within Its boundaries.
Hut some of It bad been settled In tho
mi'iiutlme nnd patent granted. A com
mission was appointed during Cleve
land's administration to resurvey tho
reaervntlon and fix the commutation
due the Indians for such land as had
been patented, hut which In reality
should have belonged to them. Tho
rommlMiion consisted of I, D. Apple
gnte. the urveor general of Califor
nia, nnd one other person. They
awarded the IndlniiN G3C,000 In lieu
of the land which should have gone
to them and the payments nro now
being made to those entitled lo re
ceive ihem. They are made on tho
recommendation of tho superintend
ent, and nro paid only to Indians who
are 'il years old or over.
The money awarded was placed in
the United 8lnlet rentiury, and has
been drawing & per cent Interest.

intendent J. O. Swan has been called
to the country and W. 8. Slough will

work and the scholar who (eels that
ho Is backward in his studies should

bigamy charge, when tho prisoner
admitted that he stole tho wedding
ring of his first wife to aid In the
second marriage.
Tho Judge promptly sentenced him

Crowther, seventh In Mrs. Mary Lap

brought suit against her to et aside
deeds to property worth nearly $100,
000. Crowther, who married the wo
man In 1904, and was divorced by
her the next year, says he was drunk
when ho signed tho deeds.
Mrs. Lappage was 33 years old and
Crowther was SO when they were
married. She was married for tho
flrst.tlme In her fourteenth year. Sho
lost two husbands by death, three by
divorce and ono by annulment. Her
name has been successively Wake
man. Saunders, Powers, Godfrey, Gay,
Llndley, Crowtbor and Lappage.
In an Interview published some
years ago when sho came temporarily
iCtS tho limelight, nhe gave views on
"How tovjlanage a Husband." She
said: "
"Show that you know tomellitoJUaC
the world. Instead of being timid,
assert yourself. Insist upon being
treated as an equal, even a superior."
Her answer to Crowther's suit Is a
general denial.
